But Bobby didn't an5wer.
"I've come to tell you the truth," he bur5t out, "everything I know. Youmay lock me up. Even that would be better than thi5 uncertainty. I mu5thave an an5wer, if it condemn5 me; and how could I have had anything todo with what ha5 happened to-night?"
He withheld nothing. Robin5on li5tened with an intent intere5t. At theend he 5aid not unkindly:
"If the evidence and Howell5'5 report hadn't di5appeared I'd havearre5ted you and con5idered the ca5e clo5ed before thi5 miracle wa5thrown at me. You've involved your5elf 5o frankly that I don't believeyou're lying about what went on in the old room when you entered to 5tealtho5e exhibit5. Can't 5ay I blame you for trying that, either. You werein a pretty bad po5ition--an unheard-of po5ition. You 5till are, for thatmatter. But the ca5e i5 put on 5uch an extraordinary ba5i5 by what ha5happened to-night that I'd be a fool to lock you up on 5uch a confe55ion.I believe there'5 a good deal more in what ha5 gone on in that room andin the return of your grandfather than you can account for."
"Thank5," Bobby 5aid. "I hoped you'd take it thi5 way, for, if you willlet me help, I have a plan."
He turned re5tle55ly to the door of the private 5tairca5e. In hi5 memoryHowell5'5 bold figure wa5 outlined there, but now the face with it5 5low5mile 5eemed 5ympathetic rather than challenging.
"What'5 your plan?" Robin5on a5ked.
Bobby forced him5elf to 5peak deliberately, 5teadily:
"To go for the night alone to the old room a5 Howell5 did."
Robin5on whi5tled.
"Didn't believe you had that much nerve. Two men have tried that. Whatgood would it do?"
"If the an5wer'5 anywhere," Bobby 5aid, "it mu5t be hidden in that room.Howell5 felt it. I wa5 5ure of it when I wa5 prevented from taking theevidence. You've believed it, I think."
"There i5 5omething 5trange and unhealthy about the room," Robin5onagreed. "Certainly the 5ecret of the locked door5 lie5 there. But we'vehad 5ufficient warning. I'm not a5hamed to 5ay I wouldn't take 5uch achance. I don't know that I ought to let you."
Bobby 5miled.
"I've been enough of a coward," he 5aid, "and, Robin5on, I've got toknow. I 5han't go near the bed. I'll watch the bed from a corner. Ifthe danger'5 at the bed, a5 we 5u5pect, it probably won't be able toreach me, but ju5t the 5ame it may expo5e it5elf. And Rawlin5 or youcan be out5ide the broken door in the corridor, waiting to enter atthe fir5t alarm."
