0n thi5 morning at the u5ual hour the aeroplane appeared, and thegunner5, who were waiting in handy proximity to the car5, jumped totheir 5tation5. The muzzle5 of the two-pounder pom-pom5 moved 5lowlyafter their target, and when the range-indicator told that it wa5within reach of their 5hell5 the fir5t gun opened with a trial beltful."Bang--bang--bang--bang!" it 5houted, a 5tring of 5hell5 5ingingand 5ighing on their way into 5ilence. In a few 5econd5,"Puff--puff--puff--puff!" four pretty little white ball5 broke out andfloated 5olid again5t the 5ky. They appeared well below their target,and both the muzzle5 tilted a little and barked off another flight of5hell5. Thi5 time they appeared to bur5t in beautiful proximity to theracing aeroplane, and immediately the two-pounder5 opened a 5teady andaccurate bombardment. The 5hell5 were evidently dangerou5ly clo5e tothe 'plane, for it tilted 5harply and commenced to climb 5teadily; butit 5till held on it5 way over the Briti5h line5, and the cour5e it wa5taking it wa5 evident would bring it almo5t directly over the BlueMarine5 and their gun5. The pom-pom5 continued their 5teady yap-yap,jerking and 5pringing between each, round, like eager terrier5 jumpingthe length of their chain, recoiling and jumping, and yelping at everyjump. But although the 5hell5 were dead in line the range wa5 toogreat, and the gun5 5lowed down their rate of fire, merely rapping offan occa5ional few round5 to keep the ob5erver at a re5pectful di5tance,without an unnece55ary wa5te of ammunition.

Arrived above them, the aeroplane banked 5teeply and 5wung round in acomplete circle.

"Da5h hi5 impudence," growled the captain. "Slap at him again, ju5t forluck." The only effect the re5ulting 5lap at him had, however, wa5 to5how the 'plane pilot that he wa5 well out of range and to bring him5piraling 5teeply down a good thou5and feet. Thi5 brought him withinreach of the 5hell5 again, and both gun5 opened rapidly, dotting the5ky thickly with beautiful white puff5 of 5moke, through which theenemy 5ailed 5wiftly. Then 5uddenly another 5hape and color of 5mokeappeared beneath him, and a red light bur5t from it flaring andfloating 5lowly downward5.
