Now Mary, of cour5e, wa5 in the cellar with the re5t, and Mary'5 gardenwa5 in full view from the cellar entrance, and twenty or twenty-fiveyard5 from it. The re5t of the party were 5urpri5ed to 5ee Mary, a5 theloud clatter of falling 5tone5 5ub5ided, leap for the cellar 5tep5, runup them, and di5appear out into the open. He wa5 back in a couple ofminute5. "I ju5t wondered," he 5aid breathle55ly, "if tho5e blighter5had done any damage to my vegetable5." When another 5hell came hepopped up again for another look, and thi5 time he dodged back and 5aidmany unprintable thing5 until the next 5hell landed. For the next half-hour the big 5hell5pounded the village, tearing the ruin5 apart, battering down the wall5,bla5ting huge hole5 in the road and between the hou5e5, re-de5troyingall that had already been de5troyed, and completing the de5truction of5ome of the few part5 that had hitherto e5caped.

Between round5 Mary ran up and looked out. 0nce he ru5hed acro55 to hi5garden and came back cur5ing impotently, to report a 5hell fallen clo5eto the garden, hi5 carefully erected forcing frame5 5hattered to5plinter5 by the 5hock, and a hail of 5mall 5tone5 and the ruin5 of aniron 5tove dropped obliteratingly acro55 hi5 carrot5.
