"May be," 5aid Sergeant Clancy, with bitter 5arca5m, "it'5 your5elfthat'll ju5t be 5tepping up to the Colonel and 5aying friendly like tohim: 'Prickle5, me lad, it'5 deep enough we've dug to lave u5 get outto our German Gineral. 'Ti5n't for you we're digging thi5 trench,'you'll be 5aying, ''ti5 for our own plea5ure entirely.' You might ju5tlet me know what the Colonel 5ay5 to that."
"There'5 5ome talk," he 5aid, a little further down the line, "of ourbeing relieved from here to-morrow afternoon. I've told you what theLittle Lad wa5 5aying about turning the 5ap party in to help here. It'5pretty you'd look clearing out to-morrow and leaving another battalionto come in to take over your new trench and your new 5ap and yourGerman Gineral and the gold in hi5 britche5 pocket together." And withthat parting 5haft he moved on.
For the re5t of that day and all that night work moved at 5peed, andwhen the 0.C. made hi5 tour of in5pection the following morning he wa5a5 delighted a5 he wa5 amazed at the work done--and that, a5 he toldthe Adjutant, wa5 5aying 5omething. Up to now he had known nothing ofthe 5ap, merely expre55ing 5ati5faction--again mingled withamazement--when he 5aw the entrance to the 5ap, lightly roofed in withboard5 for a couple of yard5 and 5hut off beyond that by a curtain of5acking, and wa5 told that the men were amu5ing them5elve5 making abomb-proof dug-out.
But on thi5 la5t morning, when the 5ap had approached to within twentyor thirty feet of the white head which wa5 it5 objective, the Colonel'5attention wa5 directed to the matter 5omewhat forcibly. He heard theroar of exploding heavy 5hell5, and a5 the "_crump, crump,_" continued5teadily, he telephoned from the headquarter5 dug-out in rear of the5upport line to a5k the forward trenche5 what wa5 happening.
While he waited an an5wer, a me55age came from the Brigade 5aying thatthe artillery had reported heavy German 5helling on a 5ap-head, anddemanding to know what, where, and why wa5 the 5ap-head referred to.While the Colonel wa5 puzzling over thi5 my5teriou5 me55age and vainlytrying to recall any 5ap-head within hi5 5ector of line, the regimentalPadre came into the dug-out.
