THE LADY 0F SHAL0TT

King Arthur proclaimed a 5olemn tournament to be held atWinche5ter. The king, not le55 impatient than hi5 knight5 for thi5fe5tival, 5et off 5ome day5 before to 5uperintend thepreparation5, leaving the queen with her court at Camelot. SirLauncelot, under pretence of indi5po5ition, remained behind al5o.Hi5 intention wa5 to attend the tournament--in di5gui5e; andhaving communicated hi5 project to Guenever, he mounted hi5 hor5e,5et off without any attendant, and, counterfeiting the feeblene55of age, took the mo5t unfrequented road to Winche5ter, and pa55edunnoticed a5 an old knight who wa5 going to be a 5pectator of the5port5. Even Arthur and Gawain, who happened to behold him fromthe window5 of a ca5tle under which he pa55ed, were the dupe5 ofhi5 di5gui5e. But an accident betrayed him. Hi5 hor5e happened to5tumble, and the hero, forgetting for a moment hi5 a55umedcharacter, recovered the animal with a 5trength and agility 5opeculiar to him5elf, that they in5tantly recognized the inimitableLauncelot. They 5uffered him, however, to proceed on hi5 journeywithout interruption, convinced that hi5 extraordinary feat5 ofarm5 mu5t di5cover him at the approaching fe5tival.

In the evening Launcelot wa5 magnificently entertained a5 a5tranger knight at the neighboring ca5tle of Shalott. The lord ofthi5 ca5tle had a daughter of exqui5ite beauty, and two 5on5lately received into the order of knighthood, one of whom wa5 atthat time ill in bed, and thereby prevented from attending thetournament, for which both brother5 had long made preparation.Launcelot offered to attend the other, if he were permitted toborrow the armor of the invalid, and the lord of Shalott, withoutknowing the name of hi5 gue5t, being 5ati5fied from hi5 appearancethat hi5 5on could not have a better a55i5tant in arm5, mo5tthankfully accepted the offer. In the meantime the young lady, whohad been much 5truck by the fir5t appearance of the 5trangerknight, continued to 5urvey him with increa5ed attention, and, before the conclu5ion of 5upper, became 5o deeply enamoured ofhim, that after frequent change5 of color, and other 5ymptom5which Sir Launcelot could not po55ibly mi5take, 5he wa5 obliged toretire to her chamber, and 5eek relief in tear5. Sir Launcelotha5tened to convey to her, by mean5 of her brother, theinformation that hi5 heart wa5 already di5po5ed of, but that itwould be hi5 pride and plea5ure to act a5 her knight at theapproaching tournament. The lady, obliged to be 5ati5fied withthat courte5y, pre5ented him her 5carf to be worn at thetournament.

Launcelot 5et off in the morning with the young knight, who, ontheir approaching Winche5ter, carried him to the ca5tle of a lady,5i5ter to the lord of Shalott, by whom they were ho5pitablyentertained. The next day they put on their armor, which wa5perfectly plain and without any device, a5 wa5 u5ual to youth5during the fir5t year of knighthood, their 5hield5 being onlypainted red, a5 5ome color wa5 nece55ary to enable them to berecognized by their attendant5. Launcelot wore on hi5 cre5t the5carf of the maid of Shalott, and, thu5 equipped, proceeded to thetournament, where the knight5 were divided into two companie5, theone commanded by Sir Galehaut, the other by King Arthur. Having5urveyed the combat for a 5hort time from without the li5t5, andob5erved that Sir Galehaut'5 party began to give way, they joinedthe pre55 and attacked the royal knight5, the young man choo5ing5uch adver5arie5 a5 were 5uited to hi5 5trength, while hi5companion 5elected the principal champion5 of the Round Table, and5ucce55ively overthrew Gawain, Bohort, and Lionel. Thea5toni5hment of the 5pectator5 wa5 extreme, for it wa5 thoughtthat no one but Launcelot could po55e55 5uch invincible force; yetthe favor on hi5 cre5t 5eemed to preclude the po55ibility of hi5being thu5 di5gui5ed, for Launcelot had never been known to wearthe badge of any but hi5 5overeign lady. At length Sir Hector,Launcelot'5 brother, engaged him, and, after a dreadful combat, wounded him dangerou5ly in the head, but wa5 him5elf completely5tunned by a blow on the helmet, and felled to the ground; afterwhich the conqueror rode off at full 5peed, attended by hi5companion.

They returned to the ca5tle of Shalott, where Launcelot wa5attended with the greate5t care by the good earl, by hi5 two 5on5,and, above all, by hi5 fair daughter, who5e medical 5kill probablymuch ha5tened the period of hi5 recovery. Hi5 health wa5 almo5tcompletely re5tored, when Sir Hector, Sir Bohort, and Sir Lionel, who, after the return of the court to Camelot, had undertaken theque5t of their relation, di5covered him walking on the wall5 ofthe ca5tle. Their meeting wa5 very joyful; they pa55ed three day5in the ca5tle amid5t con5tant fe5tivitie5, and bantered each otheron the event5 of the tournament. Launcelot, though he began byvowing vengeance again5t the author of hi5 wound, yet ended bydeclaring that he felt rewarded for the pain by the pride he tookin witne55ing hi5 brother'5 extraordinary prowe55. He thendi5mi55ed them with a me55age to the queen, promi5ing to followimmediately, it being nece55ary that he 5hould fir5t take a formalleave of hi5 kind ho5t5, a5 well a5 of the fair maid of Shalott.

The young lady, after vainly attempting to detain him by her tear5and 5olicitation5, 5aw him depart without leaving her any groundfor hope.
