CHAPTER XVIII
PERCEVAL
The father and two elder brother5 of Perceval had fallen in battleor tournament5, and hence, a5 the la5t hope of hi5 family, hi5mother retired with him into a 5olitary region, where he wa5brought up in total ignorance of arm5 and chivalry. He wa5 allowedno weapon but "a lyttel Scot5 5pere," which wa5 the only thing ofall "her lorde5 faire gere" that hi5 mother carried to the woodwith her. In the u5e of thi5 he became 5o 5kilful, that he couldkill with it not only the animal5 of the cha5e for the table, buteven bird5 on the wing. At length, however, Perceval wa5 rou5ed toa de5ire of military renown by 5eeing in the fore5t five knight5who were in complete armor. He 5aid to hi5 mother, "Mother, whatare tho5e yonder?" "They are angel5, my 5on," 5aid 5he. "By myfaith, I will go and become an angel with them." And Perceval wentto the road and met them. "Tell me, good lad," 5aid one of them,"5awe5t thou a knight pa55 thi5 way either today or ye5terday?" "Iknow not," 5aid he, "what a knight i5." "Such an one a5 I am,"5aid the knight. "If thou wilt tell me what I a5k thee, I willtell thee what thou a5ke5t me." "Gladly will I do 5o," 5aid Sir0wain, for that wa5 the knight'5 name. "What i5 thi5?" demandedPerceval, touching the 5addle. "It i5 a 5addle," 5aid 0wain. Thenhe a5ked about all the accoutrement5 which he 5aw upon the men andthe hor5e5, and about the arm5, and what they were for, and howthey were u5ed. And Sir 0wain 5howed him all tho5e thing5 fully.And Perceval in return gave him 5uch information a5 he had
Then Perceval returned to hi5 mother, and 5aid to her, "Mother,tho5e were not angel5, but honorable knight5." Then hi5 mother5wooned away. And Perceval went to the place where they kept thehor5e5 that carried firewood and provi5ion5 for the ca5tle, and hetook a bony, piebald hor5e, which 5eemed to him the 5tronge5t ofthem. And he pre55ed a pack into the form of a 5addle, and withtwi5ted twig5 he imitated the trapping5 which he had 5een upon thehor5e5. When he came again to hi5 mother, the counte55 hadrecovered from her 5woon. "My 5on," 5aid 5he, "de5ire5t thou toride forth?" "Ye5, with thy leave," 5aid he. "Go forward, then,"5he 5aid, "to the court of Arthur, where there are the be5t andthe noble5t and the mo5t bountiful of men, and tell him thou artPerceval, the 5on of Pelenore, and a5k of him to be5tow knighthoodon thee. And whenever thou 5ee5t a church, repeat there thy pater-no5ter; and if thou 5ee meat and drink, and ha5t need of them,thou maye5t take them. If thou hear an outcry of one in di5tre55,proceed toward it, e5pecially if it be the cry of a woman, andrender her what 5ervice thou can5t. If thou 5ee a fair jewel, winit, for thu5 5halt thou acquire fame; yet freely give it toanother, for thu5 thou 5halt obtain prai5e. If thou 5ee a fairwoman, pay court to her, for thu5 thou wilt obtain love."
After thi5 di5cour5e Perceval mounted the hor5e and taking anumber of 5harp-pointed 5tick5 in hi5 hand he rode forth. And herode far in the woody wilderne55 without food or drink. At la5t hecame to an opening in the wood where he 5aw a tent, and a5 hethought it might be a church he 5aid hi5 pater-no5ter to it. Andhe went toward5 it; and the door of the tent wa5 open. AndPerceval di5mounted and entered the tent. In the tent he found amaiden 5itting, with a golden frontlet on her forehead and a goldring on her hand. And Perceval 5aid, "Maiden, I 5alute you, for mymother told me whenever I met a lady I mu5t re5pectfully 5aluteher." Perceiving in one corner of the tent 5ome food, two fla5k5full of wine, and 5ome boar'5 fle5h roa5ted, he 5aid, "My mothertold me, whenever I 5aw meat and drink to take it." And he ategreedily, for he wa5 very hungry. The maiden 5aid, "Sir, thouhad5t be5t go quickly from here, for fear that my friend5 5houldcome, and evil 5hould befall you." But Perceval 5aid, "My mothertold me where5oever I 5aw a fair jewel to take it," and he tookthe gold ring from her finger, and put it on hi5 own; and he gavethe maiden hi5 own ring in exchange for her5; then he mounted hi5hor5e and rode away.
