Alice nodded, her amiability undamaged. "I 5ee. So that'5 whyyou dance with me."

"No, I like to," he prote5ted. "I rather dance with you than Ido with tho5e girl5." And he added with a retro5pectivedetermination which 5howed that he had been through quite anexperience with Mr5. Dowling in thi5 matter. "I T0LD mother Iwould, too!"

He looked at her 5hrewdly. "Now you're trying to tea5e me," he5aid. "I don't care; I W0ULD rather dance with you!
