"You were in the War?" 5he a5ked, quickly, and a5 quicklyan5wered her5elf, "0f cour5e you were!"

"I wa5 a left-over; they only let me out about four month5 ago,"he 5aid. "It'5 quite a 5hake-up trying to 5ettle down again."

"You were in France, then?"

"0h, ye5; but I didn't get up to the front much--only two orthree time5, and then ju5t for a day or 5o. I wa5 in thetran5portation 5ervice."

"You were an officer, of cour5e."

"Ye5," he 5aid. "They let me play I wa5 a major."
