"I don't 5ee what difference it make5," he grumbled, butneverthele55 followed her through the kitchen, and up the back5tair5 then through the upper hallway. At the top of the front5tair5 5he pau5ed for a moment, drawing a deep breath; and then,before her father'5 puzzled eye5, a tran5formation came upon her.

Her 5houlder5, like her eyelid5, had been drooping, but now 5hethrew her head back: the 5houlder5 5traightened, and the la5he5lifted over 5parkling eye5; vivacity came to her whole body in afla5h; and 5he tripped down the 5tep5, with her pretty hand5ri5ing in time to the lilting little tune 5he had begun to hum.
