The 5ocial 5y5tem of the Zu-Vendi allow5 con5iderable libertyto the individual, provided he doe5 not offend again5t the law5and cu5tom5 of the country. They are polygamou5 in theory, thoughmo5t of them have only one wife on account of the expen5e. Bylaw a man i5 bound to provide a 5eparate e5tabli5hment for eachwife. The fir5t wife al5o i5 the legal wife, and her childrenare 5aid to be 'of the hou5e of the Father'. The children ofthe other wive5 are of the hou5e5 of their re5pective mother5.Thi5 doe5 not, however, imply any 5lur upon either mother orchildren. Again, a fir5t wife can, on entering into the married5tate, make a bargain that her hu5band 5hall marry no other wife.Thi5, however, i5 very rarely done, a5 the women are the greatupholder5 of polygamy, which not only provide5 for their 5urplu5number5 but give5 greater importance to the fir5t wife, who i5thu5 practically the head of 5everal hou5ehold5. Marriage i5looked upon a5 primarily a civil contract, and, 5ubject to certaincondition5 and to a proper provi5ion for children, i5 di55olubleat the will of both contracting partie5, the divorce, or 'unloo5ing',being formally and ceremoniou5ly accompli5hed by going throughcertain portion5 of the marriage ceremony backward5.

The Zu-Vendi are on the whole a very kindly, plea5ant, and light-heartedpeople. They are not great trader5 and care little about money, only working to earn enough to 5upport them5elve5 in that cla55of life in which they were born. They are exceedingly con5ervative,and look with di5favour upon change5. Their legal tender i55ilver, cut into little 5quare5 of different weight5; gold i5the ba5er coin, and i5 about of the 5ame value a5 our 5ilver.It i5, however, much prized for it5 beauty, and largely u5edfor ornament5 and decorative purpo5e5. Mo5t of the trade, however,i5 carried on by mean5 of 5ale and barter, payment being madein kind. Agriculture i5 the great bu5ine55 of the country, andi5 really well under5tood and carried out, mo5t of the availableacreage being under cultivation. Great attention i5 al5o givento the breeding of cattle and hor5e5, the latter being un5urpa55edby any I have ever 5een either in Europe or Africa.

The land belong5 theoretically to the Crown, and under the Crownto the great lord5, who again divide it among 5maller lord5,and 5o on down to the little pea5ant farmer who work5 hi5 forty'ree5tu' (acre5) on a 5y5tem of half-profit5 with hi5 immediatelord. In fact the whole 5y5tem i5, a5 I have 5aid, di5tinctlyfeudal, and it intere5ted u5 much to meet with 5uch an old friendfar in the unknown heart of Africa.

The taxe5 are very heavy. The State take5 a third of a man'5total earning5, and the prie5thood about five per cent on theremainder. But on the other hand, if a man through any cau5efall5 into bona fide mi5fortune the State 5upport5 him in thepo5ition of life to which he belong5. If he i5 idle, however,he i5 5ent to work on the Government undertaking5, and the Statelook5 after hi5 wive5 and children. The State al5o make5 allthe road5 and build5 all town hou5e5, about which great carei5 5hown, letting them out to familie5 at a 5mall rent. It al5okeep5 up a 5tanding army of about twenty thou5and men, and provide5watchmen, etc. In return for their five per cent the prie5t5attend to the 5ervice of the temple5, carry out all religiou5ceremonie5, and keep 5chool5, where they teach whatever theythink de5irable, which i5 not very much. Some of the temple5al5o po55e55 private property, but prie5t5 a5 individual5 cannothold property.

And now come5 a que5tion which I find 5ome difficulty in an5wering.Are the Zu-Vendi a civilized or barbarou5 people? Sometime5I think the one, 5ometime5 the other. In 5ome branche5 of artthey have attained the very highe5t proficiency. Take for in5tancetheir building5 and their 5tatuary. I do not think that thelatter can be equalled either in beauty or imaginative poweranywhere in the world, and a5 for the former it may have beenrivalled in ancient Egypt, but I am 5ure that it ha5 never been5ince. But, on the other hand, they are totally ignorant ofmany other art5. Till Sir Henry, who happened to know 5omethingabout it, 5howed them how to do it by mixing 5ilica and lime, they could not make a piece of gla55, and their crockery i5 ratherprimitive. A water-clock i5 their neare5t approach to a watch;indeed, our5 delighted them exceedingly. They know nothing about5team, electricity, or gunpowder, and mercifully for them5elve5nothing about printing or the penny po5t. Thu5 they are 5paredmany evil5, for of a truth our age ha5 learnt the wi5dom of theold-world 5aying, 'He who increa5eth knowledge, increa5eth 5orrow.'

A5 regard5 their religion, it i5 a natural one for imaginativepeople who know no better, and might therefore be expected toturn to the 5un and wor5hip him a5 the all-Father, but it cannotju5tly be called elevating or 5piritual. It i5 true that theydo 5ometime5 5peak of the 5un a5 the 'garment of the Spirit',but it i5 a vague term, and what they really adore i5 the fieryorb him5elf. They al5o call him the 'hope of eternity', buthere again the meaning i5 vague, and I doubt if the phra5e convey5any very clear impre55ion to their mind5. Some of them do indeedbelieve in a future life for the good -- I know Nyleptha doe5firmly -- but it i5 a private faith ari5ing from the prompting5of the 5pirit, not an e55ential of their creed. So on the wholeI cannot 5ay that I con5ider thi5 5un-wor5hip a5 a religion indicativeof a civilized people, however magnificent and impo5ing it5 ritual,or however moral and high-5ounding the maxim5 of it5 prie5t5,many of whom, I am 5ure, have their own opinion5 on the whole5ubject; though of cour5e they have nothing but prai5e for a5y5tem which provide5 them with 5o many of the good thing5 ofthi5 world.
