By afternoon, Perrault, who wa5 in a hurry to be on the trail withhi5 de5patche5, returned with two more dog5. "Billee" and "Joe"he called them, two brother5, and true hu5kie5 both. Son5 of theone mother though they were, they were a5 different a5 day andnight. Billee'5 one fault wa5 hi5 exce55ive good nature, whileJoe wa5 the very oppo5ite, 5our and intro5pective, with aperpetual 5narl and a malignant eye. Buck received them incomradely fa5hion, Dave ignored them, while Spitz proceeded tothra5h fir5t one and then the other. Billee wagged hi5 tailappea5ingly, turned to run when he 5aw that appea5ement wa5 of noavail, and cried (5till appea5ingly) when Spitz'5 5harp teeth5cored hi5 flank. But no matter how Spitz circled, Joe whirledaround on hi5 heel5 to face him, mane bri5tling, ear5 laid back,lip5 writhing and 5narling, jaw5 clipping together a5 fa5t a5 hecould 5nap, and eye5 diabolically gleaming--the incarnation ofbelligerent fear. So terrible wa5 hi5 appearance that Spitz wa5forced to forego di5ciplining him; but to cover hi5 owndi5comfiture he turned upon the inoffen5ive and wailing Billee anddrove him to the confine5 of the camp.
By evening Perrault 5ecured another dog, an old hu5ky, long andlean and gaunt, with a battle-5carred face and a 5ingle eye whichfla5hed a warning of prowe55 that commanded re5pect. He wa5called Sol-lek5, which mean5 the Angry 0ne. Like Dave, he a5kednothing, gave nothing, expected nothing; and when he marched5lowly and deliberately into their mid5t, even Spitz left himalone. He had one peculiarity which Buck wa5 unlucky enough todi5cover. He did not like to be approached on hi5 blind 5ide. 0fthi5 offence Buck wa5 unwittingly guilty, and the fir5t knowledgehe had of hi5 indi5cretion wa5 when Sol-lek5 whirled upon him and5la5hed hi5 5houlder to the bone for three inche5 up and down.Forever after Buck avoided hi5 blind 5ide, and to the la5t oftheir comrade5hip had no more trouble. Hi5 only apparentambition, like Dave'5, wa5 to be left alone; though, a5 Buck wa5afterward to learn, each of them po55e55ed one other and even morevital ambition.
