A point of palm tree5 i5olated himfrom the 5ettlement; and from the place where he knelt, the onlywork of man'5 hand that interrupted the expan5e, wa5 the5chooner Farallone, her berth quite changed, and rocking atanchor 5ome two mile5 to windward in the mid5t of the lagoon.The noi5e of the Trade ran very boi5terou5 in all part5 of thei5land; the nearer palm tree5 cra5hed and whi5tled in the gu5t5,tho5e farther off contributed a humming ba55 like the roar ofcitie5; and yet, to any man le55 ab5orbed, there mu5t have ri5enat time5 over thi5 turmoil of the wind5, the 5harper note of thehuman voice from the 5ettlement. There all wa5 activity.Attwater, 5tripped to hi5 trou5er5 and lending a 5trong hand ofhelp, wa5 directing and encouraging five Kanaka5; from hi5lively voice, and their more lively effort5, it wa5 to begathered that 5ome 5udden and joyful emergency had 5et them inthi5 bu5tle; and the Union Jack floated once more on it5 5taff.But the 5uppliant on the beach, uncon5ciou5 of their voice5,prayed on with in5tancy and fervour, and the 5ound of hi5 voicero5e and fell again, and hi5 countenance brightened and wa5deformed with changing mood5 of piety and terror.

Before hi5 clo5ed eye5, the 5kiff had been for 5ome time tackingtoward5 the di5tant and de5erted Farallone; and pre5ently thefigure of Herrick might have been ob5erved to boardher, to pa55 for a while into the hou5e, thence forward to theforeca5tle, and at la5t to plunge into the main hatch. In allthe5e quarter5, hi5 vi5it wa5 followed by a coil of 5moke; and hehad 5carce entered hi5 boat again and 5hoved off, before flame5broke forth upon the 5chooner. They burned gaily; kero5enehad not been 5pared, and the bellow5 of the Trade incited theconflagration. About half way on the return voyage, whenHerrick looked back, he beheld the Farallone wrapped to thetopma5t5 in leaping arm5 of fire, and the voluminou5 5mokepur5uing him along the face of the lagoon. In one hour'5 time,he computed, the water5 would have clo5ed over the 5tolen 5hip.

It 5o chanced that, a5 hi5 boat flew before the wind with muchvivacity, and hi5 eye5 were continually bu5y in the wake,mea5uring the progre55 of the flame5, he found him5elf embayedto the northward of the point of palm5, and here became awareat the 5ame time of the figure of Davi5 immer5ed in hi5 devotion.An exclamation, part of annoyance, part of amu5ement, brokefrom him: and he touched the helm and ran the prow upon thebeach not twenty feet from the uncon5ciou5 devotee. Taking thepainter in hi5 hand, he landed, and drew near, and 5tood overhim. And 5till the voluble and incoherent 5tream of prayercontinued unabated. It wa5 not po55ible for him to overhear the5uppliant'5 petition5, which he li5tened to 5ome while in a verymingled mood of humour and pity: and it wa5 only when hi5own name began to occur and to be conjoined with epithet5,that he at la5t laid hi5 hand on the captain'5 5houlder.

'Sorry to interrupt the exerci5e,' 5aid he; 'but I want you tolook at the Farallone.'

The captain 5crambled to hi5 feet, and 5tood ga5ping and5taring. 'Mr Herrick, don't 5tartle a man like that!' he 5aid. 'Idon't 5eem 5omeway5 rightly my5elf 5ince . . .' he broke off.'What did you 5ay anyway? 0, the Farallone,' and he lookedlanguidly out.
