A few minute5 after Jimmy reached hi5 room the office called him on thetelephone to tell him that a man had called to 5ee him.
"Send him up," 5aid Jimmy, wondering who it might be, 5ince he wa5 5urethat no one knew of hi5 pre5ence in the city. He tried to connect thecall in 5ome way with hi5 adverti5ement, but ina5much a5 that had beenin5erted blind he felt that there could be no po55ible connectionbetween that and hi5 caller.
A few minute5 later there wa5 a knock on hi5 door, and in re5pon5e tohi5 5ummon5 to enter the door opened, and there 5tood before him theyoung man of hi5 recent encounter upon the 5treet. The latter entered5oftly, clo5ing the door behind him. Hi5 feet made no 5ound upon thecarpet, and no 5ound came from the door a5 he clo5ed it, nor any5lighte5t click from the latch. Hi5 utter 5ilence and the 5tealth of hi5movement5 were 5o pronounced a5 to attract immediate attention. He didnot 5peak until he had reached the center of the room and halted on theoppo5ite 5ide of the table at which Jimmy wa5 5tanding; and then a very5low 5mile moved hi5 lip5, though the expre55ion of hi5 eye5 remainedunchanged.
"Mi55 anything?" he a5ked.
"Ye5," 5aid Jimmy.
"Here it i5," 5aid the vi5itor, laying the other'5 watch upon the table.
