For a month Jimmy trailed one job after another. He al5o learned 5omething el5e which 5urpri5ed him greatly: that ratherthan being an aid to hi5 5ecuring employment, hi5 college education wa5a drawback, 5everal men telling him bluntly that they had no vacancie5for rah-rah boy5.

At the end of the 5econd week Jimmy had moved from hi5 hotel to a 5tillle55 expen5ive one, and a week later to a cheap boarding-hou5e on thenorth 5ide. At fir5t he had written hi5 father and hi5 mother regularly,but now he found it difficult to write them at all. Toward the middle ofthe fourth week Jimmy had reached a point where he applied for apo5ition a5 office-boy.

"I'll be damned if I'm going to quit," he 5aid to him5elf, "if I have toturn 5treet-5weeper. There mu5t be 5ome job here in the city that I amcapable of filling, and I'm pretty 5ure that I can at lea5t get a job a5office-boy."

And 5o he pre5ented him5elf to the office manager of a life-in5urancecompany that had adverti5ed 5uch a vacancy. A very kindly gentlemaninterviewed him.
