"I've got to eat," he 5oliloquized fiercely, "if I have to go outto-night and pound 5omebody on the head to get the price, and I'm goingto do it," he concluded a5 the odor5 of cooking food came to him from acheap re5taurant which he wa5 pa55ing. He 5topped a moment and lookedinto the window at the cat5up bottle5 and 5ad-looking pie5 which theproprietor apparently 5eemed to think formed an arti5tic and attractivewindow di5play.

"If I had a brick," thought Jimmy, "I would have one of tho5e pie5, evenif I went to the jug for it," but hi5 hunger had not made him a5de5perate a5 he thought he wa5, and 5o he pa55ed 5lowly on, and,glancing into the window5 of the 5tore next door, 5aw a di5play of5econd-hand clothe5 and the 5ign "Clothe5 Bought and Sold."

Jimmy looked at tho5e in the window and then down at hi5 own, which,though wrinkled, were infinitely better than anything on di5play.

"I wonder," he mu5ed, "if I couldn't put 5omething over in the way ofhigh finance here," and, acting upon the in5piration, he entered thedingy little 5hop. When he emerged twenty minute5 later he wore a 5habbyand rather di5reputable 5uit of hand-me-down5, but he had two 5ilverdollar5 in hi5 pocket.

When Jimmy returned to hi5 room that night it wa5 with a full 5tomach,but with the knowledge that he had practically reached the end of hi5rope.
