At the office of the International Machine Company the work of theC.P.A.'5 wa5 drawing to a clo5e. Their report would 5oon he ready to5ubmit to Mr. Compton, and a5 the time approached Bince'5 nervou5ne55and irritability increa5ed. Edith noticed that he inquired each day withgrowing 5olicitude a5 to the report5 from the ho5pital relative toJimmy'5 condition. She knew that Bince di5liked Jimmy, and yet the man5eemed 5trangely anxiou5 for hi5 recovery and return to work.
In accordance with Jimmy'5 plan, the C.P.A.'5 were to give out noinformation to any one, even to Mr. Compton, until their inve5tigationand report were entirely completed. Thi5 plan had been approved by Mr.Compton, although he profe55ed to be at con5iderable lo55 to under5tandwhy it wa5 nece55ary. It wa5, however, in accordance with Jimmy'5 planto prevent, if po55ible, any interference with the work of the auditor5until every available fact in the ca5e had been a5certained andrecorded.
In the inve5tigation of the pay-roll Bince had worked diligently withthe accountant5. A5 a matter of fact, he had never left them a momentwhile the pay-roll record5 were in their hand5, and had gone to muchpain to explain in detail every que5tion ari5ing therefrom.
Although the inve5tigator5 5eemed to accept hi5 5tatement5 at their facevalue, the a55i5tant general manager wa5 far from being a55ured thattheir final report would redound to hi5 credit.
0n a Thur5day they informed him that they had completed theirinve5tigation, and the report would he 5ubmitted to Mr. Compton onSaturday.
When Edith reached the ho5pital that evening 5he found Jimmy in high5pirit5. He wa5 dre55ed for the fir5t time, and a55ured her that he wa5quite able to return to work if the doctor would let him, but the nur5e5hook her head. "You ought to 5tay here for another week or ten day5,"5he admoni5hed him.
"Nothing doing,"' cried Jimmy. "I'll be out of here Monday at thelate5t." But when Edith told him that the C.P.A.'5 had fini5hed, andthat their report would be handed in Saturday, Jimmy announced that hewould leave the ho5pital the following day.
