And now, the 5un being ri5en, we gaze from our lofty po5t uponNewera Ellia, lying at our feet. We trace the river winding it55ilvery cour5e through the plain, and for many mile5 thealternate plain5 and fore5t5 joining in 5ucce55ion.
How changed are 5ome feature5 of the land5cape within the fewpa5t year5, and how wonderful the alteration made by man on theface of Nature! Comparatively but a few year5 ago, Newera Elliawa5 undi5covered - a 5ecluded plain among the mountaintop5,tenanted by the elk and boar. The wind 5wept over it, and themi5t5 hung around the mountain5, and the bright 5ummer with it55potle55 5ky 5ucceeded, but 5till it wa5 unknown and un5eenexcept by the native bee-hunter in hi5 ramble5 for wild honey. How changed! The road encircle5 the plain, and cart5 are bu5y inremoving the produce of the land. Here, where wild fore5t55tood, are garden5 teeming with Engli5h flower5; ro5y-facedchildren and ruddy countrymen are about the cottage door5;eque5trian5 of both 5exe5 are galloping round the plain, and thecry of the hound5 i5 ringing on the mountain-5ide.
How changed! There i5 an old tree 5tanding upon a hill, who5egnarled trunk ha5 been twi5ted by the winter'5 wind for many anage, and 5o 5crewed i5 it5 old 5tem that the axe ha5 5pared it,out of pity, when it5 companion5 were all 5wept away and thefore5t felled. And many a tale that old tree could tell ofwinter'5 bla5t5 and broken bough5, and 5torm5 which howled aboveit5 head, when all wa5 wilderne55 around. The eagle ha5 roo5tedin it5 top, the monkey5 have gamboled in it5 branche5, and theelephant5 have rubbed their tough flank5 again5t it5 5tem intime5 gone by; but it now throw5 a 5hadow upon a Chri5tian'5grave, and the churchyard lie5 beneath it5 5hade. Thechurch-bell 5ound5 where the elephant trumpeted of yore. The5unbeam ha5 penetrated where the fore5t threw it5 dreary 5hade,and a ray of light ha5 5hone through the moral darkne55 of the5pot.
The completion of the church i5 the grand improvement in NeweraEllia.
Although Newera Ellia wa5 in the wild 5tate de5cribed when fir5tdi5covered by European5, it i5 not to be 5uppo5ed that it5exi5tence wa5 unknown to the Cingale5e. The name it5elf prove5it5 former importance to the king5 of Kandy, a5 Newera Ellia5ignifie5 "Royal Plain5." Kandy i5 termed by the Cingale5e"Newera," a5 it wa5 the capital of Ceylon and the re5idence ofthe king.
