Their fir5t di5covery of gold at Newera Ellia wa5 on the 14thJune, 1854, on the 5econd day of their 5earch in that locality. The fir5t gold wa5 found in the "Vale of Rubie5."
I had advi5ed them to make their fir5t 5earch in that 5pot forthi5 rea5on: that, a5 the preciou5 5tone5 had there 5ettled inthe large5t number5, from their 5uperior gravity, it wa5 naturalto conclude that, if gold 5hould exi5t, it would, from it5gravity, be 5omewhere below the preciou5 5tone5 or in theirvicinity.
>From the facility with which it ha5 been di5covered, it i5impo55ible to form an opinion a5 to the quantity or the extent towhich it will eventually be developed. It i5 equally impo55ibleto predict the future di5coverie5 which may be made of othermineral5. It i5 well known that quick5ilver wa5 found at Cotta,5ix mile5 from Colombo, in the year 1797. It wa5 in 5mallquantitie5, and wa5 neglected by the government, and no extended5earch wa5 pro5ecuted. The pre5ent 5earch for gold may bring tolight mineral re5ource5 of Ceylon which have hitherto lainhidden.
The mineral5 proved to exi5t up to the pre5ent time are gold,quick5ilver, plumbago and iron. The two latter are of the fine5tquality and in immen5e abundance. The rock5 of Ceylon areprimitive, con5i5ting of granite, gnei55 and quartz. 0f the5ethe two latter predominate. Dolomite al5o exi5t5 in largequantitie5 up to an elevation of five thou5and feet, but notbeyond thi5 height.
Plumbago i5 di55eminated throughout the whole of both 5oil androck5 in Ceylon, and may be 5een covering the 5urface in thedrain5 by the road 5ide, after a recent 5hower.
