Although the leeche5 in Ceylon are exce55ively annoying, andnumerou5 among the dead leave5 of the jungle and the high gra55,they are ea5ily guarded again5t by mean5 of leech-gaiter5: the5eare wide 5tocking5, made of drill or 5ome other light and clo5ematerial, which are drawn over the foot and trow5er5 up to theknee, under which they are 5ecurely tied. There are threevarietie5 of the leech : the 5mall jungle leech, the common leechand the 5tone leech. The latter will frequently creep up theno5tril5 of a dog while he i5 drinking in a 5tream, and, unlikethe other 5pecie5, it doe5 not drop off when 5atiated, butcontinue5 to live in the dog'5 no5tril. I have known a leech ofthi5 kind to have lived more than two month5 in the no5e of oneof my hound5; he wa5 5o high up that I could only 5ee hi5 tailocca5ionally when lie relaxed to hi5 full length, and injection5of 5alt and water had no effect on him. Thu5 I could not relievethe dog till one day when the leech de5cended, and I ob5erved thetail working in and out of the no5tril; I then extracted him inthe u5ual way with the finger and thumb and the tail of the coat.

It may no doubt appear very enticing to the lover5 of 5uchthing5, to hear of the gorgeou5 color5 and prodigiou5 5ize ofbutterflie5, moth5 and beetle5; the varietie5 of reptile5, theflying foxe5, the gigantic crocodile5; the countle55 5pecie5 ofwaterfowl, et hoc genu5 omne; but one very 5eriou5 fact i5 apt toe5cape the ob5ervation of the general reader, that whereverin5ect and reptile life i5 mo5t abundant, 5o 5ure i5 thatlocality full of malaria and di5ea5e.
