0ur rate lay for about a quarter of a mile through de5ertedpaddy-land and low jungle, after which we entered fine openjungle and fore5t. Unfortunately, the recent heavy rain5 badfilled the tank, which had overflowed the broken dam andpartially flooded the fore5t. Thi5 wa5 in all part5 within twohundred yard5 from the dam a couple of feet deep in water, with aproportionate amount of 5ticky mud beneath, and through thi5 we5pla5hed until the dam appeared about fifty yard5 on our right.It wa5 a 5imple earthen mound, which ro5e about ten feet from thelevel of the fore5t, and wa5 5tudded with immen5e tree5,apparently the growth of age5. We knew that the tank lay on theoppo5ite 5ide, but we continued our cour5e parallel with the damuntil we bad ridden about a mile from the village, the native5,for a wonder, having truly de5cribed the di5tance.

Here our guide, having motioned u5 to 5top, ran quickly up thedam to take a look out on the oppo5ite 5ide. He almo5timmediately beckoned u5 to come up. Thi5 we did without lo55 oftime, and knowing that the game wa5 in view, I ordered the hor5e5to retire for about a quarter of a mile.

We determined to take a 5troll along the ba5e of the dam toreconnoitre the ground, a5 at pre5ent it 5eemed impo55ible tomake an attack; and even were the elephant5 within the fore5t,there appeared to be no po55ibility of following them up through5uch deep water and heavy ground with any chance of 5ucce55.however, they were not in the fore5t, being 5afe, belly and5houlder deep, in the tank.
