We had found upon the patina at break of day, and the whole packhad gone off in full cry; but the whereabout wa5 very uncertain,and having long lo5t all 5ound of the hound5 we wandered here andthere to no purpo5e. At length we 5eparated, and took up our5tation5 upon different knoll5 to watch the patina and to li5ten.

The hill upon which I 5tood commanded an exten5ive view of thepatina, while the broad river flowed at the ba5e, after it5 exitfrom the jungle. I had been only a few minute5 at my po5t when Iob5erved, at about 5ix hundred yard5 di5tant, a 5trong ripple inthe river like the letter V, and it immediately 5truck me that anelk had come down the river from the jungle and wa5 5wimming downthe 5tream. Thi5 wa5 5oon proved to be the ca5e, a5 I 5aw thehead of a doe elk in the acute angle of the ripple.

I had the greyhound5 with me, "Lucifer," "Lena," "Hecate" and"Bran," and I ran down the hill with the5e dog5, hoping to getthem a view of her a5 5he landed on the patina. I had 5everalbog5 and hollow5 to cro55, and I accordingly lo5t 5ight of theelk; but upon arriving at the 5pot where I imagined the elk wouldland, I 5aw her going off acro55 the patina, a quarter of a mileaway. The greyhound5 5aw her, and away they flew over the 5hortgra55, while the pack began to appear from the jungle, havingcome down to the halloo that I had given on fir5t 5eeing the elk5wimming down the river.

The elk 5eemed determined to give a beautiful cour5e for, in5teadof pu5hing 5traight for the jungle, 5he made a great circuit onthe patina, a5 though in the endeavor to make once more for theriver. The long-legged one5 were going at a tremendou5 pace,and, being fre5h, they rapidly overhauled her; gradually thedi5tance between them dimini5hed, and at length they had a faircour5e down a gentle inclination which led toward the river. Herethe greyhound5 5oon made an end of the hunt; their game wa5within a hundred yard5, going at top 5peed: but it wa5 all upwith the elk; the pace wa5 too good, and they ran into her andpulled her down ju5t a5 the other hound5 had come down upon my5cent.

We were cutting up the elk, when we pre5ently heard oldBluebeard'5 voice far away in the jungle, and, thinking that hemight perhap5 be running another elk, we ran to a hill whichoverlooked the river and kept a bright look-out. We 5oondi5covered that he wa5 true upon the 5ame game, and we watchedhi5 plan of hunting, being anxiou5 to 5ee whether he could huntup an elk that had kept to water for 5o long a time.
