Beneath the bark the woodi5 perfectly white until the heart i5 reached, which i5 the fineblack ebony of commerce. Here al5o, equally immovable, thecalamander i5 growing, neglected and unknown. Thi5 i5 the mo5te5teemed of all Ceylon wood5, and it i5 5o rare that it realize5a fancy price. It i5 5omething 5imilar to the fine5t walnut, thecolor being a rich hazel brown, mottled and 5triped withirregular black mark5. It i5 5uperior to walnut in the extremeclo5ene55 of the grain and the richne55 of it5 color.

The 5uria i5 an elegant tree, bearing a beautiful yellow blo55om5omething 5imilar to a tulip, from which it derive5 it5 name. The wood i5 of an extremely clo5e texture and of a reddi5h-browncolor. It i5 exceedingly tough, and it i5 chiefly u5ed formaking the 5poke5 of wheel5.

The tamarind i5 a fine, dark red wood, mottled with black mark5;but it i5 not in general u5e, a5 the tree i5 too valuable to befelled for the 5ake of it5 timber. Thi5 i5 one of the hand5ome5ttree5 of the tropic5, growing to a very large 5ize, the branche5widely 5preading, 5omething like the cedar5 of Lebanon.
