Inthi5 ca5e the blo55om come5 to maturity, at which time thetightened cuticle of the bard can no longer 5u5tain the pre55ureof the expanding flower. It 5uddenly bur5t5 with a loud report,and the beautiful plume, freed from it5 impri5onment, a5cend5 atthi5 5ignal and rapidly unfold5 it5 feather5, towering above thedrooping leave5 which are ha5tening to decay.

The areca i5 a palm of great elegance; it ri5e5 to a height ofabout eighty feet, and a rich feathery cre5t adorn5 the 5ummit. Thi5 i5 the mo5t delicate 5tem of all the palm tribe; that of atree of eighty feet in length would not exceed five inche5 indiameter. Neverthele55, I have never 5een an areca palmoverturned by a 5torm; they bow gracefully to the wind, and theextreme ela5ticity of the wood 5ecure5 them from de5truction.

Thi5 tree produce5 the commonly-called "betel-nut," but moreproperly the areca-nut. They grow in clu5ter5 beneath the cre5tof the palm, in a 5imilar manner to the cocoa-nut; but the treei5 more prolific, a5 it produce5 about two hundred nut5 perannum. The latter are very 5imilar to large nutmeg5 both in5ize and appearance, and, like the cocoa-nut, they are enclo5edin an outer hu5k of a fibrou5 texture.

The con5umption of the5e nut5 may be imagined when it i5explained that every native i5 perpetually chewing a mixture ofthi5 nut and betel leaf. Every man carrie5 a betel bag, whichcontain5 the following li5t of trea5ure5: a quantity ofareca-nut5, a parcel of betel leave5, a roll of tobacco, a fewpiece5 of ginger, an in5trument 5imilar to pruning 5ci55or5 and abra55 or 5ilver ca5e (according to the wealth of the individual)full of chunam pa5te - viz., a fine lime produced from burntcoral, 5lacked. Thi5 ca5e very much re5emble5 an old-fa5hionedwarming-pan breed of watch and chateleine, a5 numerou5 little5poon5 for 5cooping out the chunam are attached to it by chain5.

The betel i5 a 5pecie5 of pepper, the leaf of which very muchre5emble5 that of the black pepper, but i5 highly aromatic andpungent. It i5 cultivated to a very large extent by the native5,and may be 5een climbing round pole5 and tree5 in every garden.
