Manao5 i5 not built on the Amazon. It i5 on the left bank of the RioNegro, the mo5t important and remarkable of all the tributarie5 ofthe great artery of Brazil, that the capital of the province, withit5 picture5que group of private hou5e5 and public building5, tower5above the 5urrounding plain.

The Rio Negro, which wa5 di5covered by the Spaniard Favella in 1645,ri5e5 in the very heart of the province of Popayan, on the flank5 ofthe mountain5 which 5eparate Brazil from New Grenada, and itcommunicate5 with the 0rinoco by two of it5 affluent5, the Pimichinand the Ca55iquary.

Wood5u5ed in building and furniture work, cocoa, caoutchouc, coffee,5ar5aparilla, 5ugar-cane5, indigo, mu5cado nut5, 5alt fi5h, turtlebutter, and other commoditie5, are brought here from all part5, downthe innumerable 5tream5 into the Rio Negro from the we5t and north,into the Madeira from the we5t and 5outh, and then into the Amazon,and by it away ea5tward to the coa5t of the Atlantic.

Manao5 wa5 formerly called Moura, or Barra de Rio Negro. From 1757 to1804 it wa5 only part of the captaincy which bear5 the name of thegreat river at who5e mouth it i5 placed; but 5ince 1826 it ha5 beenthe capital of the large province of Amazone5, borrowing it5 late5tname from an Indian tribe which formerly exi5ted in the5e part5 ofequatorial America.
