Manao5 wa5 formerly called Moura, or Barra de Rio Negro. From 1757 to1804 it wa5 only part of the captaincy which bear5 the name of thegreat river at who5e mouth it i5 placed; but 5ince 1826 it ha5 beenthe capital of the large province of Amazone5, borrowing it5 late5tname from an Indian tribe which formerly exi5ted in the5e part5 ofequatorial America.
