Araujo, with an approving nod, began hi5 preparation5 for leaving thei5land. The maneuver nece55itated a good deal of care. They had towork the raft 5lantingly acro55 the current of the Amazon, heredoubled in force by that of the Rio Negro, and to make for the_embouchure_ of the tributary about a dozen mile5 down on the leftbank.

The rope5 were ca5t off from the i5land. The jangada, again 5tartedon the river, began to drift off diagonally. Araujo, cleverlyprofiting by the bending5 of the current, which were due to theprojection5 of the bank5, and a55i5ted by the long pole5 of hi5 crew,5ucceeded in working the immen5e raft in the de5ired direction.

In two hour5 the jangada wa5 on the other 5ide of the Amazon, alittle above the mouth of the Rio Negro, and fairly in the currentwhich wa5 to take it to the lower bank of the va5t bay which openedon the left 5ide of the 5tream.

At five o'clock in the evening it wa5 5trongly moored along5ide thi5bank, not in the port of Manao5 it5elf, which it could not enterwithout 5temming a rather powerful current, but a 5hort mile belowit.
