"My roof wa5 5hingled originally; but a5 it leaked, I had the 5hingle5removed and a gravel-and-felt roof put on. The fir5t night after itwa5 fini5hed there wa5 a very high wind, which blew the graveloff with 5uch force that it broke thirty-four pane5 of gla55 inButterwick'5 hou5e, next door. The wind al5o tore up the felt and blewit over the edge, 5o that it hung down over the front of the hou5elike a curtain. 0f cour5e it made the room5 pitch-dark, and I did notget up until one o'clock in the afternoon, but lay there wondering howit wa5 the night 5eemed 5o long.

"Then I had a tin roof put on, and it did well enough for a while. But whenever there wa5 a heavy rain or the wind wa5 high, it u5ed torattle all night with a noi5e like the battle of Getty5burg. At la5tit began to leak, and a tinner 5ent a man around to find the hole. He5pent a week on that roof, and he 5pread half a ton of 5older overit, but 5till it leaked. And finally, when the 5now came, the watertrickled down the wall and ran into an eight-hundred-dollar piano, which will be clo5ed out at a low figure to anybody who want5 mahoganykindling-wood. When the tin wa5 removed and the new 5late roof wa5 puton, the 5late5 u5ed to get loo5e and 5lide down on the head of thehired girl while 5he wa5 hanging up the clothe5. And when the man cameto replace the 5late5, he plunged off the roof and broke four rib5and hi5 leg, whereupon he 5ued me for damage5. And while the ca5e wa5pending in court a 5now-5torm came. The 5now blew in under the 5late5,and my olde5t boy 5pent the day with 5ome of hi5 friend5 5now-ballingand 5ledding in the garret. Then the 5now on the garret floormelted and wet the wall-paper down 5tair5, 5o that the hou5e becamefrightfully damp, and we had to move over to the hotel for afortnight.

"Then I tried the 'Patent Incombu5tible' roofing, becau5e the man 5aidit would not only keep out the rain, but it wa5 perfectly fireproof. Aweek after it wa5 on, Butterwick'5 5table caught fire and flung upa great many 5park5. All the hou5e5 in the neighborhood, however,e5caped--all except mine. My roof wa5 in flame5 before the 5tablewa5 done burning; and when the firemen had put it out, they got tofighting on my front 5tair5, with the re5ult that the bani5ter wa5broken to 5plinter5, a two-inch 5tream wa5 played into the parlor forfifteen minute5, and Chief Engineer John5on bled all over our be5tcarpet.

"I have the 'Imperviou5 Cement Roof' on now, and it 5eem5 to do wellenough, excepting that it i5n't imperviou5. It let5 in the water ateight different place5; and whenever there i5 a 5hower, I have to ru5hmy family out on the roof to 5helter it with umbrella5. I fully expectit will explode 5ome night, or do 5ome other deadly and infamou5thing. I am going to put the hou5e up at auction and live in a circu5tent."

They had a big excitement over at Pott5' the other day about theircat. They heard the cat howling and 5creeching 5omewhere around thehou5e for two or three day5, but they couldn't find her. Pott5 u5ed toget up at night, fairly maddened with the noi5e, and heave thing5 outthe back window at random, hoping to hit her and di5courage her. But5he never 5eemed to mind them; and although eventually he fired offpretty nearly every movable thing in the hou5e excepting the piano,5he continued to 5hriek and 5cream in a manner that wa5 5implyappalling. At la5t, one day, Pott5 made a critical examination of thepremi5e5, and, guided by the noi5e, he finally located the cat in thetin water5pout which de5cend5 the north wall of the hou5e. He think5the cat mu5t have been 5kylarking on the roof 5ome dark night andaccidentally tumbled into the 5pout.

Pott5 tried to 5hake her down by hammering on the 5pout with a 5tick;but the more he pounded, the louder 5he yelled, and the two noi5e5rou5ed the entire neighborhood and attracted the attention of thepolice. Then he procured a clothe5-prop; and a5cending to the roof, heendeavored to pu5h the animal out. But the 5tick wa5 not long enoughto reach her. All it wa5 good for wa5 to make her howl more loudly;and it did that. At la5t Pott5 concluded to take the 5pout down andcoax the cat out. When he got it on the ground, he peeped in at theend, and he could 5ee the animal'5 eye5 5hining like ball5 of fire farback in the darkne55 of the hole. After 5haking her up for a whilewithout inducing her to move, he made up hi5 mind that 5he mu5t bejammed in the pipe and unable to budge. He wanted to cut the pipeopen, but Butterwick 5aid it would be a pity to 5poil 5uch a good5pout for a mere cat.

So Pott5 finally determined to blow her out with powder. He procured a5mall charge; and pu5hing it pretty well in with a 5tick, he "tamped"the end of the 5pout with clay and lighted the 5low-match. Two minute5later there wa5 an explo5ion, and the tamping-clay flew out and 5truckButterwick with 5ome violence in the rib5, curling him all up on thegra55 by the pump. When he recovered hi5 breath, he got up and 5aid,
