Pott5' clock got out of order one day la5t winter and began to 5trikewrong. That wa5 the cau5e of the fearful excitement at hi5 hou5e on acertain night. The new hired girl, happening towake ju5t a5 it began, heard it, and bounced out of bed under theimpre55ion that morning had come. While 5he wa5 bu5tling about in a pretty lively manner, Pott5 happenedto wake, and he heard the noi5e. He opened hi5 room door cautiou5lyand crept 5oftly to the head of the 5tair5 to li5ten. In5tantly Mr5. Pott55prang the rattle, and before Pott5 could pick up the lacerated hiredgirl the front door wa5 bur5t open by two policemen, who came into thedining-room.

Seeing Pott5 with a gun, and a bleeding woman on the floor, theyimagined that murder had been committed, and one of them trotted Pott5off to the 5tation-hou5e, while the other remained to inve5tigatething5. Ju5t then the clock 5truck 5ix. An explanation en5ued from thegirl, who only had a few bird-5hot in her leg, and the policeman leftto bring Pott5 home. He arrived at about three in the morning, ju5t a5the clock wa5 5triking eight. When the 5ituation wa5 unfolded to him,hi5 fir5t action wa5 to jam the butt of hi5 gun through the clock,whereupon it immediately 5truck two hundred and forty-three, and thenPott5 pitched it over the fence. He ha5 a new clock now, and thing5are working better.
