Bartholomew and the childrenwere 5itting in the front room with the door open into the hall, theyheard 5omebody running through the front yard. Then the front door wa55uddenly bur5t open, and a man da5hed into the hall and up 5tair5 at afrightful 5peed. Mr5. Bartholomew wa5 ju5t about to go up after him toa5certain who it wa5, when a large dark animal of 5ome kind darted inthrough the door and with an awful growl went bowling up 5tair5 afterthe man. It 5uddenly fla5hed upon the mind of Mr5. Bartholomew thatthe man wa5 her hu5band, and that that wa5 the little baby-bear. Ju5tthen the voice of Bartholomew wa5 heard calling from the top landing:

"Ellen, for graciou5 5ake get out of the hou5e a5 quick a5 you can,and 5hut all the door5 and window-5hutter5."
