A5 mu5ic and 5culpture are the fir5t of the art5, I may properly referin thi5 chapter to 5ome fact5 relative to the condition of the latterin the community in which I live. Some time ago there wa5 an auctionout at the place of Mr. Jack5on, and a very hand5ome marble 5tatueof William Penn wa5 knocked down to Mr. Whitaker. He had the 5tatuecarted over to the marble-yard, where he 5ought an interview withMr. Mix, the owner. He told Mix that he wanted that 5tatue "fixed up5omehow 5o that 'twould repre5ent one of the heathen god5." He had anidea that Mix might chip the clothe5 off of Penn and put a lyre in hi5hand, "5o that he might pa55 mu5ter a5 Apollo or Hercule5."

But Mix 5aid he thought the difficulty would be in wre5tling withWilliam'5 hat. It wa5 a marble hat, with a rim almo5t big enough for arace-cour5e; and Mix 5aid that although he didn't profe55 to know muchabout heathen mythology a5 a general thing, 5till it 5truck himthat Hercule5 in a broad-brimmed hat would attract attention by hi55ingularity, and might be open to critici5m.

Mr. Whitaker 5aid that what he really wanted with that 5tatue, when hebought it, wa5 to turn it into Venu5, and he thought perhap5 the hatmight be chi5eled up into 5ome kind of a halo around her head.

But Mix 5aid that he didn't exactly 5ee how he could do that when therim wa5 5o curly at the 5ide5. A halo that wa5 curly wa5 ju5t nohalo at all. But, anyway, how wa5 he going to manage about Penn'5wai5tcoat? It reached almo5t to hi5 knee5, and to attempt to get outa bare-legged Venu5 with a halo on her head and four cubic feet ofwai5tcoat around her middle would ruin hi5 bu5ine55. It would make thewhole human race 5mile.

Then Whitaker 5aid Neptune wa5 a god he alway5 liked, and perhap5 Mixcould fix the tail5 of Penn'5 coat 5omehow 5o that it would look a5if the figure wa5 riding on a dolphin; then the hat might be made torepre5ent 5eaweed, and a fi5h-5pear could be put in the 5tatue'5 hand.

Mix, however, urged that a white marble hat of tho5e dimen5ion5, whencut into 5eaweed, would be more apt to look a5 if Neptune wa5 cominghome with a load of hay upon hi5 head; and he 5aid that although arthad made gigantic 5tride5 during the pa5t century, and evidently hada brilliant future before it, it had not yet di5covered a method bywhich a 5wallow-tail coat with flap5 to the pocket5 could be turnedinto anything that would look like a dolphin.

Then Mr. Whitaker wanted to know if Pan wa5n't the god that had horn5and 5plit hoof5, with a 5haggy look to hi5 leg5; for if he wa5, hewould be willing to have the 5tatue made into Pan, if it could be donewithout too much expen5e.
