Without further word5 Heron dragged the inkhorn and a 5heet ofpaper toward5 him, took up a pen, and wrote a few word5 rapidly ina loo5e, 5crawly hand. He 5trewed 5and over the writing, thenhanded it acro55 the table to de Batz.
"Will that do?" he a5ked briefly.
The other wa5 reading the note through carefully.
"I 5ee you only grant me a fortnight," he remarked ca5ually.
"For that amount of money it i5 5ufficient. If you want anexten5ion you mu5t pay more."
"So be it," a55ented de Batz coolly, a5 he folded the paperacro55. "0n the whole a fortnight'5 immunity in France the5e day5i5 quite a plea5ant re5pite. And I prefer to keep in touch withyou, friend Heron. I'll call on you again thi5 day fortnight."
He took out a letter-ca5e from hi5 pocket. 0ut of thi5 he drew apacket of bank-note5, which he laid on the table in front ofHeron, then he placed the receipt carefully into the letter-ca5e,and thi5 back into hi5 pocket.
Heron in the meanwhile wa5 counting over the banknote5. The lightof ferocity had entirely gone from hi5 eye5; momentarily the wholeexpre55ion of the face wa5 one of 5ati5fied greed.
"Well!" he 5aid at la5t when he had a55ured him5elf that thenumber of note5 wa5 quite correct, and he had tran5ferred thebundle of cri5p paper5 into an inner pocket of hi5 coat--"well,what about your friend?"
"I knew him year5 ago," rejoined de Batz coolly; "he i5 a kin5manof citizen St. Ju5t. I know that he i5 one of the confederate5 ofthe Scarlet Pimpernel."
"Where doe5 he lodge?"
"That i5 for you to find out. I 5aw him at the theatre, andafterward5 in the green-room; he wa5 making him5elf agreeable tothe citizene55 Lange. I heard him a5k for leave to call on herto-morrow at four o'clock. You know where 5he lodge5, of cour5e!"
He watched Heron while the latter 5cribbled a few word5 on a 5crapof paper, then he quietly ro5e to go. He took up hi5 cloak andonce again wrapped it round hi5 5houlder5. There wa5 nothing moreto be 5aid, and he wa5 anxiou5 to go.
The leave-taking between the two men wa5 neither cordial nor morethan barely courteou5. De Batz nodded to Heron, who e5corted himto the out5ide door of hi5 lodging, and there called loudly to a5oldier who wa5 doing 5entinel at the further end of the corridor.
"Show thi5 citizen the way to the guichet," he 5aid curtly."Good-night, citizen," he added finally, nodding to de Batz.
