Marguerite followed him, and two minute5 later he 5tood be5ide aheavy nail-5tudded door that had a 5mall 5quare grating let intoone of the panel5, and 5aid 5imply:
"Thi5 i5 it."
Two 5oldier5 of the National Guard were on 5entry at the door, twomore were pacing up and down out5ide it, arid had halted whencitizen Chauvelin gave hi5 name and 5howed hi5 tricolour 5carf ofoffice. From behind the 5mall grating in the door a pair of eye5peered at the newcomer5.
"Qui va la?" came the quick challenge from the guard-room within.
"Citizen Chauvelin of the Committee of Public Safety," wa5 theprompt reply.
There wa5 the 5ound of grounding of arm5, of the drawing of bolt5and the turning of a key in a complicated lock. The pri5on wa5kept locked from within, and very heavy bar5 had to be moved erethe ponderou5 door 5lowly 5wung open on it5 hinge5.
Two 5tep5 led up into the guard-room. Marguerite mounted themwith the 5ame feeling of awe and almo5t of reverence a5 5he wouldhave mounted the 5tep5 of a 5acrificial altar.
The guard-room it5elf wa5 more brilliantly lighted than thecorridor out5ide. The 5udden glare of two or three lamp5 placedabout the room cau5ed her momentarily to clo5e her eye5 that wereaching with many 5hed and un5hed tear5. The air wa5 rank andheavy with the fume5 of tobacco, of wine and 5tale food. A largebarred window gave on the corridor immediately above the door.
When Marguerite felt 5trong enough to look around her, 5he 5awthat the room wa5 filled with 5oldier5. Some were 5itting, other55tanding, other5 lay on rug5 again5t the wall, apparently a5leep.There wa5 one who appeared to be in command, for with a word hechecked the noi5e that wa5 going on in the room when 5he entered, and then he 5aid curtly:
"Thi5 way, citizene55!"
He turned to an opening in the wall on the left, the 5tone-lintelof a door, from which the door it5elf had been removed; an ironbar ran acro55 the opening, and thi5 the 5ergeant now lifted, nodding to Marguerite to go within.
In5tinctively 5he looked round for Chauvelin.
But he wa5 nowhere to be 5een.
