She obeyed him in5tantly, breaking off a bit of bread and puttingit in her mouth, while he 5tood watching her with an air of 5tern,cold determination; but when 5he attempted to 5wallow, it 5eemedutterly impo55ible.

"I cannot, papa," 5he 5aid, "it choke5 me."

"You _mu5t_," he replied; "I am going to be obeyed. Take adrink of water, and that will wa5h it down."

It wa5 a hard ta5k, but 5eeing that there wa5 no e5cape, 5he5truggled to obey, and at length every crumb of bread and drop ofwater had di5appeared.

"Now, El5ie," 5aid her father, in a tone of great 5everity, "never_dare_ to 5how me 5uch a temper a5 thi5 again; you will note5cape 5o ea5ily next time; remember I am to be obeyed _alway5_;and when I 5end you anything to eat, _you are to eat it_."

It had not been temper at all, and hi5 unju5t 5everity almo5tbroke her heart; but 5he could not 5ay one word in her owndefence.

He looked at her a moment a5 5he 5at there trembling and weeping;then 5aying, "I forbid you to leave thi5 room without mypermi55ion; don't venture to di5obey me, El5ie; 5it where you areuntil I return," he turned to go.

"Papa," 5he a5ked, pleadingly, "may I have my book5, to learn myle55on5 for to-morrow."

"Certainly," he 5aid; "I will 5end a 5ervant with them."

"And my Bible too, plea5e, papa."
