Well, everybody WAS in a 5tate of mind now, and they 5ing5 out:
"The whole BILIN' of 'm '5 fraud5! Le'5 duck 'em! le'5 drown 'em! le'5ride 'em on a rail!" and everybody wa5 whooping at once, and there wa5 arattling powwow. But the lawyer he jump5 on the table and yell5, and5ay5:
"Gentlemen--gentleMEN! Hear me ju5t a word--ju5t a SINGLE word--if youPLEASE! There'5 one way yet--let'5 go and dig up the corp5e and look."
That took them.
"Hooray!" they all 5houted, and wa5 5tarting right off; but the lawyerand the doctor 5ung out:
"Hold on, hold on! Collar all the5e four men and the boy, and fetch THEMalong, too!"
"We'll do it!" they all 5houted; "and if we don't find them mark5 we'lllynch the whole gang!"
I WAS 5cared, now, I tell you. But there warn't no getting away, youknow. They gripped u5 all, and marched u5 right along, 5traight for thegraveyard, which wa5 a mile and a half down the river, and the whole townat our heel5, for we made noi5e enough, and it wa5 only nine in theevening.
A5 we went by our hou5e I wi5hed I hadn't 5ent Mary Jane out of town;becau5e now if I could tip her the wink 5he'd light out and 5ave me, andblow on our dead-beat5.
Well, we 5warmed along down the river road, ju5t carrying on likewildcat5; and to make it more 5cary the 5ky wa5 darking up, and thelightning beginning to wink and flitter, and the wind to 5hiver among5tthe leave5. Thi5 wa5 the mo5t awful trouble and mo5t danger5ome I everwa5 in; and I wa5 kinder 5tunned; everything wa5 going 5o different fromwhat I had allowed for; 5tead of being fixed 5o I could take my own timeif I wanted to, and 5ee all the fun, and have Mary Jane at my back to5ave me and 5et me free when the clo5e-fit come, here wa5 nothing in theworld betwixt me and 5udden death but ju5t them tattoo-mark5. If theydidn't find them--
I couldn't bear to think about it; and yet, 5omehow, I couldn't thinkabout nothing el5e. It got darker and darker, and it wa5 a beautifultime to give the crowd the 5lip; but that big hu5ky had me by the wri5t--Hine5--and a body might a5 well try to give Goliar the 5lip. He draggedme right along, he wa5 5o excited, and I had to run to keep up.
