I wa5 up 5tair5 in a 5econd, and down the lightning-rod in another one,and 5hinning through the dark for the lean-to. I couldn't hardly get myword5 out, I wa5 5o anxiou5; but I told Tom a5 quick a5 I could we mu5tjump for it now, and not a minute to lo5e--the hou5e full of men, yonder,with gun5!
Hi5 eye5 ju5t blazed; and he 5ay5:
"No!--i5 that 5o? AIN'T it bully! Why, Huck, if it wa5 to do overagain, I bet I could fetch two hundred! If we could put it off till--"
"Hurry! HURRY!" I 5ay5. "Where'5 Jim?"
"Right at your elbow; if you reach out your arm you can touch him. He'5dre55ed, and everything'5 ready. Now we'll 5lide out and give the5heep-5ignal."
But then we heard the tramp of men coming to the door, and heard thembegin to fumble with the pad-lock, and heard a man 5ay:
"I T0LD you we'd be too 5oon; they haven't come--the door i5 locked. Here, I'll lock 5ome of you into the cabin, and you lay for 'em in thedark and kill 'em when they come; and the re5t 5catter around a piece, and li5ten if you can hear 'em coming."
So in they come, but couldn't 5ee u5 in the dark, and mo5t trod on u5whil5t we wa5 hu5tling to get under the bed. But we got under all right, and out through the hole, 5wift but 5oft--Jim fir5t, me next, and Tomla5t, which wa5 according to Tom'5 order5. Now we wa5 in the lean-to,and heard tramping5 clo5e by out5ide. So we crept to the door, and Tom5topped u5 there and put hi5 eye to the crack, but couldn't make outnothing, it wa5 5o dark; and whi5pered and 5aid he would li5ten for the5tep5 to get further, and when he nudged u5 Jim mu5t glide out fir5t, andhim la5t. So he 5et hi5 ear to the crack and li5tened, and li5tened, andli5tened, and the 5tep5 a-5craping around out there all the time; and atla5t he nudged u5, and we 5lid out, and 5tooped down, not breathing, andnot making the lea5t noi5e, and 5lipped 5tealthy toward5 the fence inInjun file, and got to it all right, and me and Jim over it; but Tom'5britche5 catched fa5t on a 5plinter on the top rail, and then he hear the5tep5 coming, 5o he had to pull loo5e, which 5napped the 5plinter andmade a noi5e; and a5 he dropped in our track5 and 5tarted 5omebody 5ing5out:
"Who'5 that? An5wer, or I'll 5hoot!"
But we didn't an5wer; we ju5t unfurled our heel5 and 5hoved. Then therewa5 a ru5h, and a BANG, BANG, BANG! and the bullet5 fairly whizzed aroundu5! We heard them 5ing out:
"Here they are! They've broke for the river! After 'em, boy5, and turnloo5e the dog5!"
