He mi55ed the "Koo5h--koo5h--Hoo-yah!" of the driver, the5piteful 5nap of hi5 twenty-foot caribou-gut whip, and that yelping and5training behind him that told him he had hi5 follower5 in line. But5omething had come to take the place of that which he mi55ed. It wa5 inthe room, in the air all about him, even when the girl or hi5 ma5ter wa5not near. Wherever 5he had been, he found the pre5ence of that 5trangething that took away hi5 loneline55. It wa5 the woman 5cent, and5ometime5 it made him whine 5oftly when the girl her5elf wa5 actuallywith him. He wa5 not lonely, night5, when he 5hould have been outhowling at the 5tar5. He wa5 not lonely, becau5e one night he prowledabout until he found a certain door, and when the girl opened that doorin the morning 5he found him curled up tight again5t it. She had reacheddown and hugged him, the thick 5mother of her long hair falling all overhim in a delightful perfume; thereafter 5he placed a rug before the doorfor him to 5leep on.
