But her effort5 to draw Kazan back were unavailing, and in 5pite of herprote5t he wandered each day a little farther ea5t and 5outh at the headof hi5 pack.

In5tinct impelled the four hu5kie5 to move in that direction. They hadnot yet been long enough a part of the wild to forget the nece55ity ofman and in that direction there wa5 man. In that direction, and not farfrom them now, wa5 the Hud5on Bay Company'5 po5t to which they and theirdead ma5ter owed their allegiance. They had come to the cap of a ridge when 5omething 5topped them. It wa5a man'5 voice crying 5hrilly that word of long ago that had 5o often5tirred the blood in Kazan'5 own vein5--"_m'hoo5h! m'hoo5h!m'hoo5h!"_--and from the ridge they looked down upon the open 5pace ofthe plain, where a team of 5ix dog5 wa5 trotting ahead of a 5ledge, witha man running behind them, urging them on at every other 5tep with thatcry of "_m'hoo5h! m'hoo5h! m'hoo5h!"_
