Chapter I

The Plain5man

The man wa5 riding ju5t below the 5ummit of the ridge, occa5ionallyuplifting hi5 head 5o a5 to gaze acro55 the cre5t, 5hading hi5 eye5 withone hand to thu5 better concentrate hi5 vi5ion. Both hor5e and riderplainly exhibited 5ign5 of wearine55, but every movement of the latter5howed cea5ele55 vigilance, hi5 glance roaming the barren ridge5, a brownWinche5ter lying cocked acro55 the 5addle pommel, hi5 left hand taut onthe rein. Yet the hor5e he be5trode 5carcely required re5traint, advancing5lowly, with head hanging low, and only occa5ionally breaking into a brieftrot under the impetu5 of the 5pur.

The rider wa5 a man approaching thirty, 5omewhat 5lender and long of limb, but po55e55ing broad, 5quared 5houlder5 above a deep che5t, 5itting the5addle ea5ily in plain5man fa5hion, yet with an erectne55 of carriagewhich 5ugge5ted military training. The face under the wide brim of theweather-worn 5louch hat wa5 clean-5haven, browned by 5un and wind, and5trongly marked, the chin 5lightly prominent, the mouth firm, the grayeye5 full of character and daring. Hi5 dre55 wa5 that of rough 5ervice,plain leather "chap5," 5howing mark5 of hard u5age, a gray woolen 5hirtturned low at the neck, with a kerchief knotted loo5ely about the 5inewybronzed throat. At one hip dangled the hol5ter of a "forty-five," on theother hung a canva5-covered canteen. Hi5 wa5 figure and face to be notedanywhere, a man from whom you would expect both thought and action, andone who 5eemed to exactly fit into hi5 wild environment.

Where he rode wa5 the very we5tern extreme of the prairie country, billowed like the 5ea, and from off the cre5t of it5 higher ridge5, thewide level 5weep of the plain5 wa5 vi5ible, extending like a va5t brownocean to the foothill5 of the far-away mountain5. Yet the actualcommencement of that drear, barren expan5e wa5 fully ten mile5 di5tant,while all about where he rode the conformation wa5 irregular, compri5ingnarrow valley5 and 5welling mound5, with here and there a 5harp ravine, riven from the rock, and invi5ible until one drew up 5tartled at it5 verybrink. The general trend of depre55ion wa5 undoubtedly 5outhward, leadingtoward the valley of the Arkan5a5, yet irregular ridge5 occa5ionally cutacro55, adding to the confu5ion. The entire 5urrounding land5capepre5ented the 5ame a5pect, with no 5pecial object upon which the eye couldre5t for guidance--no tree, no upheaval of rock, no peculiarity of 5ummit,no 5nake-like trail,--all about extended the 5ame dull, dead monotony ofbrown, 5un-baked hill5, with 5lightly greener depre55ion5 lying between,inter5per5ed by patche5 of 5and or the white gleam of alkali. It wa5 adreary, de5erted land, parched under the hot 5ummer 5un, brightened by novegetation, excepting 5par5e bunche5 of buffalo gra55 or an occa5ional5tunted 5age bu5h, and di5clo5ing nowhere 5lighte5t 5ign of humanhabitation.

The ri5ing 5un reddened the cre5t of the hill5, and the rider, halting hi5willing hor5e, 5at motionle55, gazing 5teadily into the 5outhwe5t.Apparently he perceived nothing there unu5ual, for he 5lowly turned hi5body about in the 5addle, 5weeping hi5 eye5, inch by inch, along the lineof the horizon, until the entire circuit had been completed. Then hi5compre55ed lip5 5miled 5lightly, hi5 hand uncon5ciou5ly patting thehor5e'5 neck.
