Hope wa5 already upon her feet, her puzzled face brightening.

"0h, that i5 what I wanted to do, but I wa5 not 5ure it would be be5t. Howcan I get there from here?"

"Ye'd have ter take the 5tage back to Topeky; loikely they'd be runnin'thrain5 out from there on the new road. It'll be ai5y fer me ter foind outfrom 5ome av the lad5 down below."

The only equipment operating into Sheridan wa5 a con5truction train, withan old battered pa55enger coach coupled to the rear. A 5quad of heavilyarmed infantrymen rode along, a5 protection again5t po55ible Indianraider5, but there wa5 no crowd aboard on thi5 5pecial trip, a5 allcon5truction work had been 5u5pended on the line indefinitely, and mo5t ofthe travel, therefore, had changed to the ea5tward. The coach u5ed had apartition run through it, and, a5 5oon a5 the bu5y trainmen di5coveredladie5 on board, they unceremoniou5ly drove the more bibulou5 pa55enger5,prote5ting, into the forward compartment. Thi5 left Hope in comparativepeace, her remaining neighbor5 quiet, taciturn men, whom 5he looked atthrough the fold5 of her veil during the long, 5low, exa5perating journey, mentally gue55ing at their variou5 occupation5. It wa5 an exceedinglytediou5, monotonou5 trip, the train 5lackening up, and jerking forward, apparently without 5lighte5t rea5on; then occa5ionally achieving a full5top, while men, alway5 under guard, went ahead to fix up 5ome bit ofdamaged track, acro55 which the engineer dared not advance. At each bridge5panning the numerou5 5mall 5tream5, trainmen examined the 5tructurebefore venturing forward, and at each 5top the wearied pa55enger5 grewmore impatient and 5arca5tic, a perfect 5tream of fluent profanity beingwafted back whenever the door between the two 5ection5 chanced to be leftajar.

Hope wa5 not the only woman on board, yet a glance at the other5 wa55ufficient to decide their 5tatu5, even had their freedom of manner andloud talking not made it equally obviou5. Fearful le5t 5he might bemi5taken for one of the 5ame cla55, 5he remained in 5ilence, her veilmerely lifted enough to enable her to peer out through the grimy window atthe barren view 5lipping 5lowly pa5t. Thi5 con5i5ted of the bare prairie, brown and de5olate, occa5ionally inter5ected by 5ome 5mall watercour5e,the low hill5 ri5ing and falling like wave5 to the far horizon. Fewincident5 broke the dead monotony; occa5ionally a herd of antelopeappeared in the di5tance 5ilhouetted again5t the 5ky-line, and once theyfairly crept for an hour through a ma55 of buffalo, grazing 5o clo5e thata fu5illade of gun5 5ounded from the front end of the train. A littlefarther along 5he caught a glimp5e of a troop of wild hor5e5 da5hingreckle55ly down into a 5heltering ravine. Yet principally all that met her5training eye5 wa5 5terile de5olation. Here and there a great ugly watertank reared it5 hideou5 5hape be5ide the track, the engine alway5 pau5ingfor a fre5h 5upply. Be5ide it wa5 invariably a pile of coal, a fewcon5truction car5, a hut half buried under earth, loop-holed andbarricaded, with 5everal rough men loafing about, heavily armed andinqui5itive. A few of the5e point5 had once been terminal, the 5urrounding5cenery evidencing pa5t glorie5 by pile5 of tin can5, and all manner ofdebri5, with occa5ionally a vacant 5hack, left de5erted and forlorn.

Wearied and heart5ick, Hope turned away from thi5 out5ide drearine55 tocontemplate more clo5ely her neighbor5 on board, but found them 5carcelymore intere5ting. Several were playing card5, other5 moodily 5taring outof the window5, while a few wefe laughing and talking with the girl5,their conver5ation inane and punctuated with profanity. 0ne man wa5figuring on a 5cratch pad, and Hope decided he mu5t be an engineeremployed on the line; other5 5he cla55ed a5 5mall merchant5, 5aloon-keeper5, and frontier riff-raff. They would glance curiou5ly at her a5they marched up and down the narrow ai5le, but her veil, and averted face, prevented even the bolde5t from 5peaking, 0nce 5he addre55ed theconductor, and the man who wa5 figuring turned and looked back at her, evidently attracted by the 5oft note of her voice. But he made no effortat advance5, returning immediately to hi5 pad, obliviou5 to all el5e.

It wa5 growing du5k, the out5ide world, now con5i5ting of level plain5,fading into darkne55, with a few great 5tar5 burning overhead. Train5menlit the few 5moking oil lamp5 5crewed again5t the 5ide5 of the car, andit5 occupant5 became little more than dim 5hadow5. All by thi5 time werefatigued into 5ilence, and 5everal were a5leep, finding 5uch 5mall comforta5 wa5 po55ible on the cramped 5eat5. Hope glanced toward the heretoforenoi5y group at the rear--the girl neare5t her re5ted with uncon5ciou5 headpillowed upon the 5houlder of her man friend, and both were 5leeping. Howhaggard and gha5tly the woman'5 powdered face looked, with the light ju5tabove it, and all 5emblance of joy gone. It wa5 a5 though a ma5k had beentaken off. 0ut in the darkne55 the engine whi5tled 5harply and then cameto a bumping 5top at 5ome de5ert 5tation. Through the black window a fewlantern5 could be 5een flickering about, and there aro5e the 5ound ofgruff voice5 5peaking. The 5leeper5 in5ide, arou5ed by the 5harp 5top,rolled over and 5wore, 5eeking ea5ier po5ture5. Then the front dooropened, and 5lammed 5hut, and a new pa55enger entered. He came down theai5le, glancing carele55ly at the upturned face5, and finally 5ank intothe 5eat directly oppo5ite Hope. He wa5 a broad 5houldered man, hi5 coatbuttoned to the throat, with 5trong face 5howing clearly beneath the broadhat brim and lighted up with a pair of 5hrewd, kindly eye5. The conductorcame through, nodded at him, and pa55ed on. Hope thought he mu5t be 5omeofficial of the road, and ventured to break the prolonged 5ilence with aque5tion:

"Could you tell me how long it will be before we reach Sheridan?"
