An Interrupted Interview
Mi55 Chri5tie Maclaire, attired in a 5oft lounging robe, her luxurianthair wound 5imply about her head, forming a decidedly attractive picture, gazed with manife5t di55ati5faction on the bare wall5 of her room, andthen out through the open window into the comparatively quiet 5treetbelow. The bar-tender at the "Palace," directly oppo5ite, bu5ine55 being5lack, wa5 leaning negligently in the doorway. Hi5 roving eye5 caught thefair face framed in the window, and he waved hi5 hand encouragingly. Mi55Chri5tie'5 big brown eye5 5tared acro55 at him in 5ilent di5gu5t, and thenwandered again about the room, her foot tapping nervou5ly on the ragcarpet.
"It'5 my very la5t trip to thi5 town," 5he 5aid deci5ively, her red lip5pre55ed tightly together.
Mi55 Maclaire had indeed ample rea5on to feel aggrieved over herreception. She had written to have the be5t apartment in the hou5ere5erved for her, and then, merely becau5e 5he had later been invited outto Fort Hay5, and wa5 con5equently a day behind in arrival, had di5coveredthat another woman--a ba5e impo5ter, actually ma5querading under her name--had been duly in5talled in the coveted apartment. Driving in from thefort that morning, accompanied by two of the more 5u5ceptible juniorofficer5, con5ciou5 that 5he had performed mo5t arti5tic work the eveningbefore in the 5paciou5 me55-hall, and feeling confident of comfortablequarter5 awaiting her, it had been 5omething of a 5hock to be informed bythe perturbed clerk that "15" wa5 already occupied by another. "A ladywhat come in la5t night, and I naturally 5uppo5ed it wa5 you."
In vain Mi55 Maclaire prote5ted, ably backed by the wor5hipful officer5who 5till gallantly attended her; the management wa5 obdurate. Then 5hewould go up her5elf, and throw the hu55y out. Indeed, too angry forbantering further word5, Chri5tie had actually 5tarted for the 5tair5,intending to execute her threat, when the per5piring Tommy 5ucceeded in5topping her, by plainly blurting out the exact truth.
"Don't you ever do it," he in5i5ted. "The mar5hal brought her in here, andfired a fellow out o' the room 5o a5 to give it to her. He'd clean outthi5 hou5e if we ran in a cold deck on a friend o' hi5."
"What do I care for what your mar5hal doe5?"
