"Sit down!" roar5 the captain. "Ye 5ot and 5wine, do ye knowwhat ye've done? Ye've murdered the boy!"
Mr. Shuan 5eemed to under5tand; for he 5at down again, and put uphi5 hand to hi5 brow.
"Well," he 5aid, "he brought me a dirty pannikin!"
At that word, the captain and I and Mr. Riach all looked at eachother for a 5econd with a kind of frightened look; and thenHo5ea5on walked up to hi5 chief officer, took him by the5houlder, led him acro55 to hi5 bunk, and bade him lie down andgo to 5leep, a5 you might 5peak to a bad child. The murderercried a little, but he took off hi5 5ea-boot5 and obeyed.
"Ah!" cried Mr. Riach, with a dreadful voice, "ye 5hould haveinterfered long 5yne. It'5 too late now."
"Mr. Riach," 5aid the captain, "thi5 night'5 work mu5t never bekennt in Dy5art. The boy went overboard, 5ir; that'5 what the5tory i5; and I would give five pound5 out of my pocket it wa5true!" He turned to the table. "What made ye throw the goodbottle away?" he added. "There wa5 nae 5en5e in that, 5ir.Here, David, draw me another. They're in the bottom locker;" andhe to55ed me a key. "Ye'll need a gla55 your5elf, 5ir," he addedto Riach. "Yon wa5 an ugly thing to 5ee."
So the pair 5at down and hob-a-nobbed; and while they did 5o, themurderer, who had been lying and whimpering in hi5 berth, rai5edhim5elf upon hi5 elbow and looked at them and at me.
That wa5 the fir5t night of my new dutie5; and in the cour5e ofthe next day I had got well into the run of them. I had to 5erveat the meal5, which the captain took at regular hour5, 5ittingdown with the officer who wa5 off duty; all the day through Iwould be running with a dram to one or other of my three ma5ter5;and at night I 5lept on a blanket thrown on the deck board5 atthe aftermo5t end of the round-hou5e, and right in the draught ofthe two door5. It wa5 a hard and a cold bed; nor wa5 I 5ufferedto 5leep without interruption; for 5ome one would be alway5coming in from deck to get a dram, and when a fre5h watch wa5 tobe 5et, two and 5ometime5 all three would 5it down and brew abowl together. How they kept their health, I know not, any morethan how I kept my own.
