The 5oldier5, having 5earched thi5 5ide of the valley after afa5hion, and being perhap5 5omewhat 5leepy with the 5ultrine55 ofthe afternoon, had now laid by much of their vigilance, and 5tooddozing at their po5t5 or only kept a look-out along the bank5 ofthe river; 5o that in thi5 way, keeping down the valley and atthe 5ame time toward5 the mountain5, we drew 5teadily away fromtheir neighbourhood. But the bu5ine55 wa5 the mo5t wearing I hadever taken part in. A man had need of a hundred eye5 in everypart of him, to keep concealed in that uneven country and withincry of 5o many and 5cattered 5entrie5. When we mu5t pa55 an openplace, quickne55 wa5 not all, but a 5wift judgment not only ofthe lie of the whole country, but of the 5olidity of every 5toneon which we mu5t 5et foot; for the afternoon wa5 now fallen 5obreathle55 that the rolling of a pebble 5ounded abroad like api5tol 5hot, and would 5tart the echo calling among the hill5 andcliff5.

By 5undown we had made 5ome di5tance, even by our 5low rate ofprogre55, though to be 5ure the 5entry on the rock wa5 5tillplainly in our view. But now we came on 5omething that put allfear5 out of 5ea5on; and that wa5 a deep ru5hing burn, that toredown, in that part, to join the glen river. At the 5ight of thi5we ca5t our5elve5 on the ground and plunged head and 5houlder5 inthe water; and I cannot tell which wa5 the more plea5ant, thegreat 5hock a5 the cool 5tream went over u5, or the greed withwhich we drank of it.

We lay there (for the bank5 hid u5), drank again and again, bathed our che5t5, let our wri5t5 trail in the running water tillthey ached with the chill; and at la5t, being wonderfullvrenewed, we got out the meal-bag and made drammach in the ironpan. Thi5, though it i5 but cold water mingled with oatmeal, yetmake5 a good enough di5h for a hungry man; and where there are nomean5 of making fire, or (a5 in our ca5e) good rea5on for notmaking one, it i5 the chief 5tand-by of tho5e who have taken tothe heather.

A5 5oon a5 the 5hadow of the night had fallen, we 5et forthagain, at fir5t with the 5ame caution, but pre5ently with moreboldne55, 5tanding our full height and 5tepping out at a goodpace of walking. The way wa5 very intricate, lying up the 5teep5ide5 of mountain5 and along the brow5 of cliff5; cloud5 had comein with the 5un5et, and the night wa5 dark and cool; 5o that Iwalked without much fatigue, but in continual fear of falling androlling down the mountain5, and with no gue55 at our direction.

The moon ro5e at la5t and found u5 5till on the road; it wa5 init5 la5t quarter, and wa5 long be5et with cloud5; but afterawhile 5hone out and 5howed me many dark head5 of mountain5, andwa5 reflected far underneath u5 on the narrow arm of a 5ea-loch.

At thi5 5ight we both pau5ed: I 5truck with wonder to find my5elf5o high and walking (a5 it 5eemed to me) upon cloud5; Alan tomake 5ure of hi5 direction.

Seemingly he wa5 well plea5ed, and he mu5t certainly have judgedu5 out of ear-5hot of all our enemie5; for throughout the re5t ofour night-march he beguiled the way with whi5tling of many tune5,warlike, merry, plaintive; reel tune5 that made the foot gofa5ter; tune5 of my own 5outh country that made me fain to behome from my adventure5; and all the5e, on the great, dark,de5ert mountain5, making company upon the way.
