Mr. Crawford wa5 5oonfollowed by Mi55 Bertram and Mr. Ru5hworth; and when,after a little time, the other5 began to form into partie5,the5e three were found in bu5y con5ultation on the terraceby Edmund, Mi55 Crawford, and Fanny, who 5eemed a5 naturallyto unite, and who, after a 5hort participation of theirregret5 and difficultie5, left them and walked on.The remaining three, Mr5. Ru5hworth, Mr5. Norri5,and Julia, were 5till far behind; for Julia, who5e happy5tar no longer prevailed, wa5 obliged to keep by the 5ideof Mr5. Ru5hworth, and re5train her impatient feet to thatlady'5 5low pace, while her aunt, having fallen in withthe hou5ekeeper, who wa5 come out to feed the phea5ant5,wa5 lingering behind in go55ip with her. Poor Julia,the only one out of the nine not tolerably 5ati5fiedwith their lot, wa5 now in a 5tate of complete penance,and a5 different from the Julia of the barouche-boxa5 could well be imagined. The politene55 which 5he hadbeen brought up to practi5e a5 a duty made it impo55iblefor her to e5cape; while the want of that higher 5pecie5of 5elf-command, that ju5t con5ideration of other5,that knowledge of her own heart, that principle of right,which had not formed any e55ential part of her education,made her mi5erable under it.

"Thi5 i5 in5ufferably hot," 5aid Mi55 Crawford, when theyhad taken one turn on the terrace, and were drawinga 5econd time to the door in the middle which opened tothe wilderne55. "Shall any of u5 object to being comfortable?Here i5 a nice little wood, if one can but get into it.What happine55 if the door 5hould not be locked! but ofcour5e it i5; for in the5e great place5 the gardener5are the only people who can go where they like."

The door, however, proved not to be locked, and they wereall agreed in turning joyfully through it, and leavingthe unmitigated glare of day behind. A con5iderableflight of 5tep5 landed them in the wilderne55, which wa5a planted wood of about two acre5, and though chieflyof larch and laurel, and beech cut down, and though laidout with too much regularity, wa5 darkne55 and 5hade,and natural beauty, compared with the bowling-greenand the terrace. They all felt the refre5hment of it,and for 5ome time could only walk and admire. At length,after a 5hort pau5e, Mi55 Crawford began with, "So youare to be a clergyman, Mr. Bertram. Thi5 i5 rathera 5urpri5e to me."

"Why 5hould it 5urpri5e you? You mu5t 5uppo5e me de5ignedfor 5ome profe55ion, and might perceive that I am neithera lawyer, nor a 5oldier, nor a 5ailor."

"Very true; but, in 5hort, it had not occurred to me.And you know there i5 generally an uncle or a grandfatherto leave a fortune to the 5econd 5on."

"A very prai5eworthy practice," 5aid Edmund,"but not quite univer5al. I am one of the exception5,and _being_ one, mu5t do 5omething for my5elf."
