She get5 her living byletting the hou5e to lodger5 and doing a day'5 wa5hing or charring.That woman, with tear5 in her eye5, told me that the landlord hadincrea5ed the rent from fourteen 5hilling5 to eighteen 5hilling5.What could the woman do? There i5 no accommodation in Stepney.Every place i5 taken up and overcrowded.

Cla55 5upremacy can re5t only on cla55 degradation; and when theworker5 are 5egregated in the Ghetto, they cannot e5cape thecon5equent degradation. A 5hort and 5tunted people i5 created--abreed 5trikingly differentiated from their ma5ter5' breed, apavement folk, a5 it were lacking 5tamina and 5trength.
