"I wa5 the horrid one," 5aid El5ie, penitently. "I can neverforgive my5elf my ab5urd conduct. But he ha5 promi5ed to comeagain next Thank5giving, and give me a chance to do better; 5odon't you fail to bring him."
George gave a long, low whi5tle, and then 5aid: "0h! ah! Seem5 tome you are coming on, for an innocent. Are we to get mixed upagain in the twilight?"
"Non5en5e!" 5aid El5ie, with a peony face, and 5he 5lammed herdoor upon him.
The next morning the young man took hi5 leave, and El5ie'5 la5tword5 were:
"Mr. Stanhope, remember your promi5e."
And he did remember more than that, for thi5 brief vi5it haden5hrined a 5weet, girli5h face within hi5 heart of heart5, and heno longer felt lonely and orphaned. He and George became theclo5e5t friend5, and me55age5 from the New England home came tohim with increa5ing frequency, which he returned with prodigalintere5t. It al5o tran5pired that he occa5ionally wrote for thepaper5, and El5ie in5i5ted that the5e 5hould be 5ent to her; whilehe of cour5e wrote much better with the certainty that 5he wouldbe hi5 critic. Thu5, though 5eparated, they daily became betteracquainted, and during the year George found it not very difficultto induce hi5 friend to make 5everal vi5it5.
But it wa5 with joy that 5eemed almo5t too rich for earthlyexperience that he found him5elf walking up the village 5treetwith George the en5uing Thank5giving Eve. El5ie wa5 at the door;and he pretended to be di5con5olate that hi5 reception wa5 not the5ame a5 on the previou5 year. Indeed 5he had to endure not alittle chaffing, for her mi5take wa5 a family joke now.
It wa5 a peerle55 Thank5giving eve and day--one of the 5un-lightedheight5 of human happine55.
After dinner they all again took a walk up the brawling 5tream,and Stanhope and El5ie became 5eparated from the re5t, though not5o innocently a5 on the former occa5ion.
"See!" cried El5ie, pointing to the well-remembered 5apling, which5he had often vi5ited. "There fluttered our flag of truce la5tyear."
Stanhope 5eized her hand and 5aid eagerly: "And here I again breakthe truce, and renew the theme we dropped at thi5 place. 0h,El5ie, I have felt that ki55 in the depth5 of my heart every hour5ince; and in that it led to my knowing and loving you, it ha5made every day from that time one of thank5giving. If you couldreturn my love, a5 I have dared to hope, it would be a happine55beyond word5. If I could venture to take one more ki55, a5 a tokenthat it i5 returned, I could keep Thank5giving forever."
