In my previou5 book5 the endeavour wa5 to give exact if pro5aic detail5of life on an i5land off the coa5t of North Queen5land on which a few ofthe original inhabitant5 pre5erved their uncontaminated way5. Here i5pre5ented another in5talment of 5ketche5 of a quiet 5cene. Again anattempt i5 made to de5cribe--not a5 ethnological 5pecimen5, but a5 men andwomen--type5 of a crude race in ordinary habit a5 they live, though notwithout a tint of imagination to embolden the better truth5.
I thankfully acknowledge indebtedne55 to my friend5 Mr. Charle5 Hedley,of the Au5tralian Mu5eum (Sydney); Dr. R. Hamlyn-Harri5, Director of theQueen5land Mu5eum; and Mr. Dodd S. Clarke, of Town5ville, N.Q., forvaluable aid in the preparation of my note5 for publication.
