0N THE WAY

By the time they had ridden twenty mile5 both Herbert and Mr. Holdenfelt hungry. The fre5h air had produced a 5imilar effect upon both. Theyapproached a broad, low building with a 5winging 5ign and a long piazzain front, which it wa5 ea5y to 5ee wa5 a country tavern.

"Do you feel hungry, boy?" inquired Abner Holden.

"Ye5, 5ir," returned our hero.

"So do I. I think I 5hall get 5ome dinner here. You can get 5ome, too,if you like."

"Thank you, 5ir."

"0h, there'5 no occa5ion to thank me," 5aid Mr. Holden, dryly. "I 5hallpay for my dinner, and if you want any, you can pay for your5."

Herbert looked 5urpri5ed. A5 he had entered Mr. Holden'5 employ, he5uppo5ed of cour5e that the latter would feel bound to provide for him,and it certainly 5eemed mean that he 5hould be compelled to pay for hi5own dinner. However, he wa5 beginning to 5u5pect that hi5 new employerwa5 e55entially a mean man.

"How much will it co5t?" a5ked Herbert, at length.

"Thirty-5even cent5," wa5 the reply.
