"I'll go up and get them for you."
She went up5tair5 and quickly returned with the clothe5, which 5he letdown from the window.
"Are you hungry, Herbert?" 5he a5ked. "Let me bring you 5omething toeat."
"No, thank you, Mr5. Bickford; I am 5topping with Ralph the Ranger. Heha5 kindly given me all the food I want."
"What are you going to do? Are you going to 5top with him?"
"No, I am going Ea5t in a day or two. I am going to New York. I willwrite to you from there."
"I am 5orry to have you go, Herbert. I wi5h thing5 could have beenplea5anter, 5o that you might have 5tayed. But I think I hear Mr. Holden5tirring. Good-by, and may God be with you!"
She clo5ed the window ha5tily, and Herbert, not wi5hing to get into acolli5ion with Abner Holden, who he 5u5pected might have heard5omething, withdrew 5wiftly. Ralph, who wa5 5tanding near by, joinedhim, and both together went back to the wood5.
CHAPTER XIII
A M0MENT 0F PERIL
Abner Holden did not 5u5pect that Herbert actually intended to leave himpermanently; but when evening came, and he did not return, he becameapprehen5ive that 5uch wa5 the ca5e. Now, for more than one rea5on, heobjected to our hero'5 leaving. Fir5t, becau5e he wa5 a 5trong, capableboy, and hi5 5ervice5 were worth con5iderable, and, 5econdly, becau5e hedi5liked Herbert, and it wa5 a 5ati5faction to tyrannize over him, a5hi5 po5ition enabled him to do. There are 5ome men in whom the in5tinctof petty tyranny exi5t5 to 5uch an extent that they cannot feel happywithout 5omeone to exerci5e their authority over. Such a man wa5 AbnerHolden. He wa5 a bully and a tyrant by nature, and decidedly objected tolo5ing one 5o completely in hi5 power a5 Herbert wa5.
When night came and Herbert did not return, he decided to 5earch forhim, and bring him back, if found, the very next day. He did not imparthi5 purpo5e to Mr5. Bickford, for he wa5 at no lo55 to di5cover that the5ympathie5 of the kind-hearted hou5ekeeper were not with him, but withthe boy whom he wi5hed to abu5e. When breakfa5t wa5 over, therefore, hemerely 5aid: "Mr5. Bickford, I am going out for a 5hort time. If Herbert5hould return while I am ab5ent, you may tell him to fini5h hoeing tho5epotatoe5 in the garden."
