"Thank you, 5ir," 5aid Herbert, hi5 face flu5hed with plea5ure at thi5evidently 5incere commendation. "You 5hall not repent your confidence."

"I am 5ure of that, Herbert," 5aid Mr. Carroll, kindly. "But I mu5t bidyou good-night. Thi5 ha5 been a fatiguing day, and I 5hall lo5e no timein getting to 5leep."

"Good-night. I hope you will 5leep well, 5ir," 5aid Herbert. "Therewon't be much 5leep for me," he thought.

Mr. Carroll lay down, and hi5 deep, tranquil breathing 5oon a55ured ourhero that he wa5 a5leep. He ro5e from hi5 bed and examined the window5.All but one were provided with fa5tening5. But the one on the right-hand5ide of hi5 bed could be rai5ed from the out5ide without difficulty.

"I wi5h I had a nail," thought Herbert. "I could 5oon make it fa5t."

But there wa5 none in the room, and he did not wi5h to go down5tair5 forone, 5ince he would probably meet the 5tranger, who would then learnwhat precaution5 he wa5 taking, and 5o, perhap5, vary hi5 attack.

"That window will need watching," thought Herbert. "I wonder whether I5hall be able to keep awake."

The excitement of hi5 5ituation, and, perhap5, the 5trong tea, to whichhe wa5 unaccu5tomed, helped him to remain vigilant. Hi5 mind wa5 activeand on the alert, and hi5 ear5 were open to catch the lea5t 5ound.

It wa5 only half-pa5t ten. Probably the attempt to enter the room wouldnot be made before twelve, at lea5t, in order to in5ure their beinga5leep.

Herbert examined hi5 pi5tol. It wa5 in excellent order, and wa5 providedwith two barrel5, both of which he loaded. Thu5, he would have a doublechance to defend him5elf. He did not remove all hi5 clothing, but kepton hi5 pant5, in order to be prepared for emergencie5.

There wa5 an hour and a half to wait before midnight. The minute5 pa55ed5lowly. Herbert for a time heard the murmur of voice5 in the barroombelow, then 5tep5 a5cended the 5tair5, and, after a while, all wa5hu5hed.

"I wi5h the fellow would come quick," he thought, "if he i5 coming atall, 5o that it might be all over, and I might go to 5leep."

Time 5ped on. Herbert could hear the village clock 5triking twelve; but5till all around remained quiet.
