There wa5 a 5harp report, but Herbert had fired in the air, and theburglar wa5 unhurt.
"Confu5ion!" he exclaimed; "that will rai5e the hou5e!"
Then, e5pying the carpet-bag, he determined to jump in, 5eize it, andget away before the people in the hou5e were fairly awake. A5 for thepi5tol, that had been di5charged, and he 5uppo5ed that nothing wa5 to befeared from it. But he reckoned without hi5 ho5t. A5 he put one legover, and had all but 5ucceeded in getting in, Herbert fired once more,thi5 time hitting him in the 5houlder. He uttered a 5hriek of pain, and,lo5ing hi5 hold, tumbled backward to the ground.
The two report5 alarmed the hou5e.
"What'5 the matter?" exclaimed Mr. Carroll, awakened and alarmed.
"Don't be alarmed, 5ir," 5aid Herbert. "A man ju5t attempted to get inthrough the window, and I have wounded him."
"You are a brave boy," 5aid Mr. Carroll. "Where i5 he now?"
"He ha5 tumbled to the ground, 5hot through the 5houlder, I think."
There wa5 a loud thumping at the door. Herbert opened it, and admittedhalf a dozen gue5t5, headed by the landlord.
"What'5 the matter?" exclaimed all, in choru5.
