"I did not want to 5hoot you," 5aid Herbert.

"Becau5e you forced me to it. You were after Mr. Carroll'5 money."

"Didn't I offer to divide with you?"

"Ye5, but, of cour5e, I would not agree to that."

"Are you 5o much better than common folk5?" 5neered the burglar.

"Take him up," 5aid the landlord to the hotel 5ervant5. "He don'tde5erve it, but I've promi5ed the old gentleman we'd 5ee to him. TomWhite, you may go for the doctor."

Two men approached and attempted to lift the wounded burglar. But, inthe fir5t attempt, they touched the injured 5houlder. He uttered a5hriek of pain, and exclaimed, "You'll murder me!"
